FRIDAY REWIND: Apologies to Dumas football for ever doubting them

Things were looking rough for the Dumas football team much of the year.

At 2-4 entering district play with a few blowout losses, it lost to Randall to open district play and entered this week 3-5. Canyon was playing for an outright district championship and had just one loss on the season against West Plains.

Yet when the clock read zero on Friday night, it was the Dumas Demons doing the celebrating.

Dumas won an absolute thriller, kicking a game-winning 39-yard field goal as time expired to beat Canyon 45-42. The Demons now move to 2-1 in district and occupy the second place spot at present.

Canyon head coach Todd Winfrey said all week that Dumas is a very tough place to play, and the Demons were far better than their record would indicate. There were many out there who may have doubted that statement.

Well, Dumas, to quote Shaquille O'Neal, "I apologize. I was not familiar with your game."

Randall wins a thriller

After losing badly to their arch rivals the week before, Randall bounced back in a major way against Hereford.

The Raiders needed overtime, but they got revenge against the Herd for last year's loss with a 27-20 win. With Canyon's loss, Randall now moves into first place in district and will win a share of the district title no matter what. An impressive follow up for sure.

AISD fights

No, neither Amarillo High or Tascosa pulled off massive upsets this week. Both deserve props all the same, however, after the way they fought against their opponents.

Tascosa was tied with Lubbock-Cooper 24-24 at halftime while Amarillo High was tied with Abilene 14-14 at the midway point. Given how tough those two opponents are, that kind of fight is commendable by the two AISD schools. Both will lock up playoff spots this week with wins.

Hats off to Haiden

We don't mention six-man football nearly often enough, but we had to shout out Haiden Thompson this week for hitting a huge career milestone.

The Miami quarterback passed the 10,000 yard mark for his career. He has generated 10,181 offensive yards in his time with the Warriors and should keep churning them out with another regular-season game and likely a deep playoff run.

Other bits and pieces

  • Plainview and Palo Duro will have a de facto play-in game this Friday at Dick Bivins with the winner making the playoffs and the loser staying home. This is the second year in a row this scenario has happened with these two teams.

  • Friona and Childress locked up playoff spots while Spearman is favored to do so this week. The Lynx will have to beat Tulia to ensure that's the case.

  • With Wheeler's win over Memphis, the Mustangs should be going to the playoffs as long as they don't lose by 11 points.

  • For the second straight year, Groom rebounded from a slow start to the season to finish 5-5 and lock up a playoff spot.
