French column: Three juniors top 700, Brewster rolls 300 at Crystal Lanes

Apparently the junior bowlers noticed that there were no scores over the 700 mark in the Corning junior bowling world at Crystal Lanes last week. And they did something about it.

Three youngsters, Camryn Stefanini, Zachery Sturdevant and Cameron Kennedy, all reached 700 this week and Cameron enjoyed his stay there so much, he did it twice.

Things got started early for these guys during action in the Fall Adult/Junior Mixed League. This league is a new league this year and these youngsters are taking full advantage of the extra session. Camryn grabbed the honors in this league this week with a 752 series on games of 247, 279 and 226. It also gave him weekly honors for the junior bowlers. Cameron Kennedy joined him with a 738 series on games of 254, 248 and 236. Zachery took a bit of a break here and settled for a 647 series.

Moving on to the CIBA Jr./Sr. Mixed League and the same three culprits were at it again. This time Zachery took home the honors with a 729 series. After a so-so start, Zach came storming back with games of 278 and 264. You can figure out the first game. Cameron nailed his second seven of the week with a 722 effort on games of 254, 233 and 235. Camryn stumbled just a bit here but still managed a 611 series. This league also saw Cayden Bowman roll a 607 while Andrew Bauman chipped in with a 606 series.

That threesome of Cameron, Zachery and Camryn are putting up some impressive numbers in the first two months of the season. Together they have 15 scores of 700 or better and it’s split pretty even. Granted, they have that extra league to kick up the total a little bit, but check out these averages: Cameron is going at a 233 clip in the Adult/Junior League and 230 in the CIBA Mixed League. Zachery is at 215 (A/J) and 219 in the CIBA while Camryn is running at a 218 (A/J) and 212 mark. That’s quite a one two three punch.

Brewster rolls 300 in Tire World of Corning Men’s League

Mike Brewster did only what Mike Brewster is capable of doing. He’s a legend in my own mind. You just gotta love a guy that does what he did this week in the Tire World of Corning Men’s League.

After opening with a very competitive (for brackets) 225 game, Mike rattled off 12 strikes in a row for his first 300 game in a couple of years. Then came trouble. If there was a bad break to be had, Mike found it in game three. Needing just a buck seventy-five for seven, he came up short and finished with a 684 series. You can do the math. No question that my man Brew is full of all kinds of surprises.

While Mike took the spotlight in the Tire World League with just the seventh perfect game of the season, Wayne Ribble came away with the weekly scoring honors. After opening the session with a robust 289 game, Wayne stayed in his lane and produced scores of 235 and 257 for a 781 series.

For the record, Wayne’s 781 set was just barely enough for the weekly honors. One pin to be exact. Joey Orchowski powered a 780 series in the Atlas Pizzeria Mixed League on games of 247, 275 and 258. Another one-hit seven was rolled in the Sun Legends Bar & Grille Mixed League when Chad Farr came up with a 753 on games of 258, 227 and 268.

There were a quartet of sevens posted in the Hatfield Real Estate Men’s League. Mike Kosinski led the way with as a consistent seven as you will see. He rolled games of 251, 257 and 254 for a 762 series. He was joined by Paul Brion with a 728 set that featured a 298 game along with Scott Mattison with a 727 and Derik Lisi at the 701 mark.

Jamie Kennedy and Johnny Miller recorded the only other sevens this week in the Joey’s Contracting Mixed League. Jamie posted a 719 while Johnny blasted a 278 game on his way to a 706 total.

There were seven ladies over the 600 mark this week with five of them coming out of ‘The L’ Ladies League.

Lori Calkins took home weekly honors with her performance in this league. She took the up and down approach to a 688 series. After opening the session with a 239 game, Lori lost a couple of hits and settled for a 194 before closing the night with a 255 game to give her the honors.

In the same league, Anita Gennosa rode a 232 game to a 635 series while Cheryl Rice capped a 608 set with a 234 game and Gwen Bain, steady as ever, registered a 608 total. Deon Frost was the fifth six-shooter in this league with a 604 series. She also added a 624 set in the Joey’s Contracting Mixed League.

Meghan Sturdevant got the other ladies six when she rolled a 649, that featured a 233 game, in the Fall Adult/Junior Mixed League.

Most of the senior six-shooters came out of the Chilson-Wilcox Senior Men’s League. They had five of them with Mike Hughson leading the way.

Mike came out of the gates in a striking way. Eleven of his first 12 shots produced strikes for a 279 game. He rode that to a 669 series. John Olson came off the IR list in remarkable fashion with a 641 that was highlighted by a 236 game. Teammates Bruce Stanton and Judd McAtee were next with scores of 627 and 613 respectively while John Stermer posted a 610 total.

The scene of the other two senior sixes was the Striking Seniors Mixed League. Gary Gustin put together games of 225, 211 and 229 for a 665 series while the aforementioned John Olson capped a 646 set with a 233 game.

Tournament upcoming

And just a quick reminder. The Corning-Painted Post Sports Hall of Fame will be hosting a bowling event on Sunday, Nov. 26 (that’s the Sunday following Thanksgiving) at Crystal Lanes at noon. It’s their only fund raiser of the year and they would like to see a bunch of Hall of Famers come down and enjoy the afternoon.

They would enjoy seeing some former lacrosse or football or baseball or basketball players along with members in other categories such as track and field, volleyball, softball and contributors. Enter a team. We know a solid count of Hall of Fame bowlers will be there. They always show up every year.
