Free Press Marathon Runner of the Week: Aaron Sexton

Each week, the Detroit Free Press Bank Marathon presented by MSU Federal Credit Union chooses a runner to spotlight as the Michelob ULTRA Runner of the Week. Whether you’re training for a full marathon, going out on the weekend for a long run or getting back into the swing of running, the race loves to showcase its runners.

The marathon is proud to partner with Michelob ULTRA, the Official Malt Beverage sponsor of the Free Press Marathon. Michelob ULTRA will be sending each winner a prize pack.

Aaron Sexton

Location: Garden City.

How long you've been running: One year and two months.

Your running story, and if you feel comfortable, your latest PR or race times: I had gastric bypass surgery in May 2022. At the time, I weighed 320 pounds and felt miserable. The surgery became my second chance at living a healthier life. So, as part of my recovery and pursuit to lose weight, I started walking. Walking soon turned into running and I was hooked! I’ve lost 150 pounds since then with the help of running. I’ve run some 5k, 10k and half-marathon races since then. Completed the Martian half-marathon in Dearborn in 2:05:48. Set a 10k PR in June at 49:46. And just set my new 5k PR of 24:23 at the 2023 Running to Honor 5k Walk/Run in Taylor. Really looking forward to competing in and completing the full Freep International Marathon.

How many miles do you run per week: 30-35.

Favorite running song: "Unstoppable" by Disciple.

Favorite post-run snack: Blueberries and yogurt.

Best piece of training advice: My run is my run and nobody else’s. The only competition is yourself.

Favorite area to run: Hines Park

Are you planning on running in any Detroit Free Press/TCF Bank events in 2020: Yes! Full international marathon.
