Free agent LB’s agent hints at a possible tryout with Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins have done a lot of work to improve their defense this offense.

Starting with replacing Josh Boyer with Vic Fangio as defensive coordinator, Miami also signed David Long, Malik Reed, DeShon Elliott and others while trading for Jalen Ramsey.

However, the Dolphins might not be done.

On Wednesday, a Dolphins fan reached out to NFL agent Malki Kawa asking to get linebacker Reuben Foster a camp invite with the Miami, and the agent had an interesting response.

Foster, 29, was originally selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2017 NFL draft. Both Mike McDaniel and Jon Embree were on the 49ers staff at the time.

The Alabama product had a strong rookie season, recording 72 tackles, but he was suspended for the first two games of his second year due to violating the league’s personal conduct policy. Then, after six games that saw him record 29 tackles, he was arrested for domestic violence, leading to his release.

Foster was claimed by Washington but wasn’t allowed to play the remainder of the season, as he was put on the commissioner’s exempt list, and in 2019, he tore his ACL before the start of the regular season. He missed all of 2020 with the team as well.

The Dolphins had Foster in for a workout last April, as did the Seattle Seahawks in July, but he didn’t sign with either team.

In January, Foster signed with the Pittsburgh Maulers of the USFL. He recorded 53 tackles, one interception and a half-sack in eight games for the team.

There are some questions about Miami’s depth at interior linebacker, with Long, Jerome Baker and Duke Riley likely getting the top spots. Channing Tindall, who we didn’t see much of as a rookie, Andrew Van Ginkel, who’s mostly been an edge rusher, and undrafted rookie Aubrey Miller fill out the room.

However, Foster hasn’t played a down of regular-season, NFL football in close to five years. They may be better suited to look elsewhere for depth.
