Four Ashtabula County teams, Madison make playoffs

Four Ashtabula County football teams and Madison finished the regular season in the top-16 of their respective division and region and will play at least one postseason game.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association released the first-round playoff pairings Sunday afternoon.

Unless otherwise noted, all first-round games will be played at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Geneva and Madison, in Division III, Region 9; Edgewood, D-IV, Region 13; Conneaut, D-V, Region 17 and Pymatuning Valley, D-VI, Region 21, will all play on Friday night.

With top-eight spots, the Eagles and Lakers are scheduled to host first-round playoff games.

"I'm very proud of our team and the season we've had," Geneva coach Don Shymske said.

The Eagles (9-1) ranked second with an average-point total of 29.0449. Youngstown Ursuline was first at 34.6222.

Geneva, which is making a second-straight playoff appearance, will play No. 15 Hawken (6-4) in the opening round. The Hawks are 2-3 in their last five games. Hawken, like Geneva, defeated Edgewood 56-38 and Conneaut 40-21 in the regular season.

"They run a spread offense and a multi-front defense, but they are mostly in a four-man front," Shymske said. "They have good size on their offensive and defensive lines and good speed at their skill positions."

Last season, the Eagles played two postseason games.

The Blue Streaks (8-2), the 11th seed, are making their first playoff appearance since 2015. They will travel to No. 6 Gilmour Academy. Madison had an average of 16.85, while Gilmour's was 22.4813

The Lancers (8-2) are on a four-game winning streak, including a 48-34 decision over Buckeye (8-2).

The Warriors (6-4), as a 10th seed, go to No. 7 Niles McKinley to start the postseason. Edgewood has recorded two straight wins, including defeating Lakeside 38-20 on Friday night.

The Red Dragons (6-4) broke a three-game losing streak with a 48-28 win over Girard on Friday.

Edgewood is in the playoffs for a second straight season.

The Warriors closed with an average of 11.4 and Niles was 14.5.

The Spartans (6-4) go to Garrettsville Garfield (10-0) for an opening-round matchup. Conneaut is the 12th seed, while Garfield checks in at No. 5.

Conneaut hosted Garfield in a first-round game last season with the G-Men winning 48-21.

The Spartans, with an average of 9.1, have dropped three of their last four games, but registered a 27-24 win over Edgewood on Oct. 6.

Garfield, with an average of 19.3, ran the table in the regular season, scoring 40 or more points in each contest.

The Lakers (7-3), as the No. 6 seed with an average of 13.0639, will play No. 11 Columbiana Crestview in the first round.

PV, which is making a fourth-straight playoff appearance, is on a five-game winning streak.

They won a fifth-consecutive Northeastern Athletic Conference with a 36-0 win over Windham on Friday night.

After starting 0-4, the Rebels, with an average of 8.55, have won five of their final six regular-season games.

Lakeside, in D-II, Region 5, and Saint John, D-VI, Region 25, finished in the top-20 of their division and region, but didn't make the playoffs.

The Dragons (4-6) finished with an average of 6.9. Akron Ellet grabbed the 16th spot with an average of 7.9.

The Heralds (2-6) had an average of 1.875.

Saint John actually has a 3-6 record, but the win over Chalker didn't count in the OHSAA ratings due to Chalker playing as a club team.

Conotton Valley picked up the 16th seed with an average of 4.0531

Grand Valley (2-8), in D-VI, Region 21, and Jefferson (0-10), D-V, Region 17, closed out the season on Friday.

Second-round playoff games will be played on Nov. 3, at the better seeded team's venue.

Neutral sites will be used beginning in the third round on Nov. 10, and the regional finals on Nov. 17.

The state semifinals will be on Nov. 23, with the state championship games hosted at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 and 2.
