Fort girls third at indoor track meet; Wilson girls basketball wins: Saturday sports roundup

Indoor track

FORK UNION — Fort Defiance girls track finished third Saturday at the Fred Hardy Invitational indoor track meet hosted by Fork Union Military Academy. Fort Defiance, a Class 3 schools, had 43 point and trailed only Albemarle (70) and Louisa County (64), both Class 5 teams.

Taylor Cubbage won the 300 (43.66) and finished third in the high jump (4-10). Abby Lane had a second-place finish in both the 1600 (5:16.56) and 1000 (3:08.60), and was named the No. 2 MVP for running events. Both Cubbage and Lane qualified for states in those events.

Fort's Jenna Townsend also qualified for states, finishing second in the shot put (35-10).

Fort's 4x800 relay team finished fourth, led by Bethany Lang, Madison Conner, Violet Bast and Karina Clark.

On the boys side, Fort's Jeffrey McLaughlin qualified for states in the 55-meter hurdles and pole vault, as did Carson Wright in the pole vault.

Waynesboro's Amari Carter won the boys 55-meter dash with a time of 6.54 while Grayson Norris was second in the 3200 (10:00.42). Qua'ran Patterson was fourth in the 55-meter hurdles (7.97) and Trent Snyder was sixth in the pole vault (11-6). Waynesboro's 4x800 relay team finished fourth, led by Dylan Colander, Cooper Mayo, Grayson Norris and Ross Williamson. The Waynesboro boys finished seventh overall as a team Saturday.

Waynesboro's Jasmine Redifer was fourth in the 55-meter hurdles (9.29), long jump (15-11) and triple jump (33-4.5) and sixth in the pole vault (9-0) at the girls meet.

Riverheads' Sierra Back was sixth in the 3200 (13:20.94) and MacKenzie Roller was fourth in the shot put (31-1). For the Riverheads boys, Austin Roberts won the high jump (6-2).

Stuarts Draft's Anna Callo was third in the girls pole vault (10-0).

Girls basketball

FISHERSVILLE — Wilson Memorial's CC Robinson scored 20 points and Kelsey Payne added 18 as the Hornets beat Maggie Walker 74-31 in girls basketball Saturday afternoon.

Robinson added 14 rebounds in the win, Wilson's third in a row as the Hornets improved to 8-6 on the season. Sabrina Reeves added 10 points for Wilson.

Staunton Braves name coach

The Staunton Braves announced late last week that they have hired Brady Bogart as the team’s head coach for the 2024 season. Bogart is currently the pitching coach at Pasco Hernando State College in New Port Richey, Florida.

According to a Facebook post by the Braves, Bogart has more than 30 years of experience working in the high school, collegiate and professional ranks of baseball. Prior to his current position, Bogart was the pitching coach at University of North Florida.

Bogart also spent time on the coaching staff at Saint Leo. During multiple stints as the pitching coach for the Lions, Saint Leo tallied a 179-95 record, while also reaching the 1996 Division II South Regional Tournament and setting multiple team single-season highwater marks including consecutive wins (20), shutouts (eight) and strikeouts (467).

In addition to his collegiate coaching history, Bogart has produced a dominant 16-year tenure between time as the head coach at the Villages Charter High School and at Citrus High School. During those two stints, Bogart’s teams went 252-157, making two final four appearances, five regional finals while winning two regionals and five district titles.
