Former MBA football star Zak Herbstreit, son of ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit, hospitalized

The son of former Ohio State quarterback and lead ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit, was hospitalized on Tuesday, according to reports.

Zak Herbstreit, a walk-on tight end, is in stable condition at a local hospital and is being monitored and evaluated a school spokesperson said.

The spokesperson did not disclose the reason for the hospitalization.

"His family is with him and appreciate everyone's concerns and prayers," Kirk Herbstreit told ABC 6.

Kirk Herbstreit posted a message on social media on behalf of his son.

“I have had a bit of a setback these past couple of weeks. Not feeling right. Culminated with tests results this past Friday that forced me into the hospital. I have some of the best cardiologists looking after me, and I am beyond appreciative. We are doing a number of tests and conjuring a plan to ensure that I will be able to be back to feeling normal again. I appreciate the overwhelming support over the past couple of days. I am feeling good and hope to be out of the hospital soon.”

Zak, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound junior, walked on in June 2021 and is in his second season with the program. He played tight end for Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, earning all-region honors as a senior.

The elder Herbstreit played at Ohio State from 1989–1993 and joined ESPN in 1996. He has been the network's lead college football analyst for two decades and also was the color analyst for Thursday Night Football on Prime Video last season. He has won five Sports Emmy awards as a studio and event analyst.
