Former lottery pick floated as potential Warriors free agent target
The Golden State Warriors currently have an open roster spot. The franchise could use some additional depth at the wing position, especially in terms of wing defense and tertiary playmaking. According to Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley, Romeo Langford could be a potential low-risk, high-reward addition to the roster.
Langford was the 14th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. He spent two and half seasons with the Boston Celtics before being shipped to the San Antonio Spurs as part of the Derrick White trade. After one and a half seasons with San Antonio, Langford failed to earn a new contract and is now playing in the G-League as he waits for his next NBA opportunity.
“Golden State would get an athletic jolt and plenty of defense from Langford,” Buckley wrote. “Based on the limitations we’ve seen from this roster, the Dubs could use both. He struggled to find any kind of offensive consistency over his first four NBA seasons, but he also struggled staying on the floor due to repeat run-ins with the injury bug. His outside shot has never developed, but his defensive versatility, cutting and energy could all give him a non-zero chance of carving out a small role.”
Langford’s NBA career has been riddled with injury issues. As such, he’s never been able to string together consistent runs in a rotation or been able to truly work on developing his game. Nevertheless, he has shone as a wing defender during his time with both the Celtics and the Spurs.
Golden State could be a good landing spot for Langford. His defense and length could potentially earn him some minutes off the bench, and he would fit in well with a growing young core of impressive talents. Of course, if things don’t work out, the Warriors wouldn’t be losing anything and could move on from him in the summer.
