Former Iowa State quarterback Hunter Dekkers enrolls at Iowa Western Community College
Former Iowa State starting quarterback Hunter Dekkers, who was involved in the state's gambling probe that cost him the 2023 season, is back in action.
After sitting out last season, Dekkers has enrolled at Iowa Western Community College, the defending junior college national champions. He is eligible for the 2024 season, according to the Reivers’ media relations department.
The controversial gambling investigation resulted in several Iowa State University and University of Iowa athletes being sidelined. Some defense attorneys said the probe involved warrantless searches.
Iowa Western beat East Mississippi, 61-14, for its third National Junior College Athletic Association Division I championship in a row in December.
Dekkers started all 12 of the Cyclones' games in 2022. During that season, he passed for 3,044 yards, the fourth-most in single-season program history. Dekkers' 66.1% completion percentage led the Big 12 Conference. He last played in the 2023 spring game.
A former West Sioux of Hawarden star, Dekkers set Iowa high school career records for most passing yards (10,628) and touchdown passes (126). Dekkers also rushed for 1,214 career yards while becoming the only Iowa high school player to record consecutive seasons with 4,000 all-purpose yards. As a senior, he threw for 3,640 yards and 36 touchdowns while completing 62% of his passes.
West Sioux went 34-5 with Dekkers at quarterback and won consecutive state titles in 2017 and 2018.
