Former Green Bay Packers tight end Tyrone Davis, who played on Super Bowl XXXII team, dead at 50

SOUTH BOSTON, Virginia — Former Green Bay Packers tight end Tyrone Davis, 50, died Oct. 2.

Davis played six of his eight NFL seasons with the Packers, including the 1997 season, when Green Bay lost to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXXII.

The New York Jets drafted Davis in the fourth round of the 1995 draft. He played six games over two years for the Jets before Green Bay acquired him in an August 1997 trade with the Jets for past considerations.

Davis played in 69 games for the Packers, starting 27. He also played in seven postseason games. He caught 13 touchdowns for the Packers, including seven in 1998. His NFL career included 73 receptions, all but two of them with Green Bay.

He attended University of Virginia, where he set the record for touchdown receptions as a wide receiver. Davis' 28 touchdowns broke the record held by future NFL star receiver Herman Moore. Davis also led Virginia in receiving yards in three of his four seasons and led the Cavaliers with 38 receptions in 1994.

He's a member of the Halifax County-South Boston Sports Hall of Fame.

Teammate Earl Dotson reacted to Davis' death on Facebook: "This is difficult to post. Rest in paradise teammate. This good man Tyrone Davis fought beside me on the NFL Green Bay Packers for years. Brother forever."

The cause of his death was not disclosed.

According to his obituary, Davis was survived by his mother, four children and a brother. His funeral service was Oct. 8 in South Boston, Virginia
