Former Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce joins coaching staff as intern

Former New York Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce is returning to the team he won a Super Bowl with. His playing days are behind him but he is coming back to the Giants as a coaching intern.

The Giants had one of the NFL’s top defenses in 2016. Critics point out the linebacking corps is the weakest link.

Pierce knows how to play in defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s system. Two of his final three NFL seasons were with Spagnuolo as defensive coordinator, including the 2007 season that ended with victory in Super Bowl XLII.

Pierce will be on the Giants’ coaching staff for the remainder of the offseason. He was already sharing his expertise with B.J. Goodson, projected to be the starting middle linebacker.

“He’s always dropping advice and knowledge on me. He drops a lot of knowledge on me. So, it isn’t one particular thing that I could tell you that he does,” Goodson said after Friday’s organized team activities (OTAs). “But he’s always telling me whether it’s formation recognition or any little thing.

“The details, he’s always on me about the details, but he does a great job of helping me and I really appreciate it.”

Pierce hinted as his joining the Giants’ coaching staff with a video posted to Twitter showing the Giants’ legendary linebackers in the linebackers’ meeting room. In addition to his internship with the Giants’ coaching staff, Pierce is the head coach at Long Beach (Cal.) Polytechnic High School.

Long Beach Polytechnic has produced more NFL players than any high school in the nation including Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver DeSean Jackson, Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Marcedes Lewis, and former New England Patriots linebacker Willie McGinest.
