Former Celtic center Vincent Poirier headed to Europe with Spain’s Real Madrid

Former Boston Celtics big man Vincent Poirier is headed back to Europe to ink a multi-year deal with Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid, according to José Luis Sánchez of Spanish sports media outlet La Sexta. Traded from the Philadelphia 76ers to the New York Knicks at the 2021 NBA trade deadline and then waived after a sparse season of play with the Sixers — his landing spot after being being traded away by the Celtics in the offseason — the Frenchman found himself a free agent.

He spent some time in Philadelphia in the hopes of latching on with another NBA team, but has evidently now elected to return to play in the ACB league for the rest of this season with Real Madrid and in both the ACB and Euroleague the next three seasons.

Poirier played with Boston for just one season in 2019-20, averaging 1.9 points and 2 rebounds per game with the team.
