Football results: Big Central Conference and area roundup for Week 2

Hunterdon Central 21, Elizabeth 14: Junior quarterback RJ Hart accounted for three touchdowns, including the game winner with 7:34 left in regulation, and Hunterdon Central won a back-and-forth affair on the road at Williams Field, improving to 3-0.

Nireese McDougald, who finished with 113 rushing yards, ran one in from 65 yards out midway through the first quarter to send Elizabeth (0-3) to the early 7-0 lead.

Central tied it just over 2:00 later, as Hart slung a pass out to Jakob Saus near the right sideline, and it looked like the Red Devils back would be dragged down. But Saus broke free of the one-let tackle, and skidded 33 yards for the touchdown and the game was tied 7-7 at halftime.

Elizabeth got a short TD run from Jamad Lyles and an extra point midway through the third quarter to go up 14-7, before Hart got in on a one-yard run later in the period, but the Red Devils trailed 14-13 when the kick was blocked. Hart then hit Connor Gray with an eight-yard pass in the end zone in the fourth quarter, before the QB ran in the 2-point conversion.

Hart rushed for 88 yards and threw for 88 yards for Central. Lyles finished with 72 yards for Elizabeth.

Bernards 42, South River 7: Connor Laverty connected on three touchdown passes, including two to Jack Morra, and Logan Stevens (77 yards) and Jake Caldwell (60 yards) each broke off long scoring runs and Bernards rolled to 3-0. Max Austin also caught a TD pass in the win, while Casey Hoesckele hit Max Caldwell with an 18-yard second-half TD throw for the Mountaineers. Simon Bramwit was a perfect 5-for-5 kicking extra points.

Colonia 49, J.F. Kennedy 6: Jaeden Jones ran for 204 yards on seven carries and scored four touchdowns, including jaunts of 72 and 80 yards respectively, and Kyle Bell ran in two scores, including a 70-yard scamper, and Colonia rolled. Noah Bone pitched in a 53-yard TD run for the Patriots (2-1). Richie Trotman threw a touchdown pass for the Mustangs (0-2).

Hillsborough 29, Bridgewater-Raritan 21: Jackson Jankowicz rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns, and what started as a defensive struggle and a 7-0 Hillsborough advantage at halftime turned into a second-half shootout, but the Raiders prevailed to move to 3-0.

Boro took a 7-0 lead in the opening quarter on a 10-yard Alex Reiling-to-Andrew Advani connection and it remained that way through intermission. Bridgewater-Raritan (1-2) got on the board less than two minutes into the third quarter as Jack Bray connected with Joe Spirra on a 36-yard TD strike, and then the pair connected again on the 2-point conversion to make it 8-7.

But Hillsborough answered with just over a minute left in the third quarter, getting a five-yard scoring scamper from Shayne Powell, and the Raiders increased their lead to 22-8 on Jankowicz’s 53-yard scoring jaunt midway through the fourth quarter. The Panthers got to within 22-14 on a 20-yard Spirra catch from Bray, but Boro had the answer again, getting a 30-yard run from Jankowicz.

The Panthers got in one more time, as Devin Goldberg ran in an eight-yard TD with 3:43 remaining, but that’s how it ended at Noonan Field.

Montgomery 23, Plainfield 14: The Montgomery defense sparked a second-half rally with a sack and safety by Lucas Clark, and quarter Michael Schmelzer and running back Brady Post added rushing scores, as the Cougars erased a 14-7 halftime deficit to move to 3-0. Schmelzer hit Ethan Goluditsky with a 12-yard scoring pass to get things going for the Cougars, before Plainfield (2-1) scored two unanswered touchdowns in the second quarter, getting a two-yard Kamai Lowry run and a one-yard sneak from Ala-Meen Watkins.

Roselle Park 27, Dayton 7: Dylan George rushed for 164 yards and two touchdowns, and Xavier Padilla and Nick Salas added rushing scores, and Roselle Park moved to 1-1. Anthony Damiano added 104 rushing yards in the win, while Matthew Drada’s two sacks and Tyler Signoello’s two forced fumbles paced the Panthers’ defense. Dayton fell to 0-2.

Perth Amboy 26, J.P. Stevens 0: Jahmeil Brown rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown, and Jefferson Reyes caught a 25-yard touchdown pass and Perth Amboy grabbed the shutout win. Lavion Balthazar threw the TD for the Panthers (1-2), who also got scoring runs from Guy Bernadin and Jerone Greene, who also recovered a fumble. The Hawks are 0-3.

A.L. Johnson 34, Bound Brook 7: Robert Gallagher totaled 111 rushing yards and three touchdowns, and Emilio Menicucci added a 60-yard run Ryan George each added scoring runs to fuel A.L. Johnson (1-1). Josh Meltez-Torres notched an interception for ALJ. Bound Brook (0-2) dented the scoreboard with a 90-yards, nine-play fourth-quarter TD drive, capped by a one-yard run from Jeremiah Norwood, and a 25-yard field goal from Zion Quesada.

Middlesex 34, Manville 0: Jax Jarvis rushed for 82 yards and three touchdowns, and Dom Parenti hit Ricky Fittin with a 78-yard touchdown pass and Middlesex rolled to 2-0. Parenti ran back the second-half kickoff, 85 yards for a score, while Jarvis chipped in an interception to the Blue Jays cause. Manville is 1-2.

Immaculata 42, Newark Central 0: Cole Hayden rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown, also catching a 31-yard TD pass from Mason Geis, and Anthony Brown ran an interception back 40 yards for a score and Immaculata cruised at Torpey Field. Joe Fleming went for 95 yards and two scores for the Spartans (3-0), while Jahmier Black pitched in 67 rushing yards and a score.

Governor Livingston 2, North Plainfield 0: John Fajardo led a second-quarter assault on the punter in the end zone, after the snap was high, forcing the kicker out of bound for a safety and it proved the lone points of the game, as Governor Livingston grabbed the win at Kean University. Michael Geertsma logged two interceptions for the Highlanders, who improved to 2-1. The Canucks fell to 0-3.

Delaware Valley 28, Voorhees 7: Luke Brogan threw for 248 yards and a touchdown. Adding 81 rushing yards and a score, and Stoy Fohring finished with two rushing touchdowns to boost Delaware Valley (2-0). Michael Holzworth caught a 46-yard scoring pass from Brogan in the win. Isaac Levitan scored on a 12-yard run for Voorhees (1-2).

Summit 46, Cranford 13: Carteret Shallcross ran 22 times for 224 yards and three touchdowns, and Jake Procaccini caught three passes for 136 yards and a score and Summit rolled to 2-0. Cole Sabol completed 4-of-6 passes for 156 yards and a score, adding a rushing TD in the win. Henrique Giucardi also ran one in for the Hilltoppers, who combined to rush for 395 yards and five scores. Tyler Kessel (13 tackles) and Matt Cooper (11 tackles) paced the Summit defense. Fire Anderson ran for 78 yards on 18 carries and a Cranford touchdown, while Amari Petgrave gained 88 yards on the ground, plus a score for the Cougars (1-1).

Watchung Hills 49, North Hunterdon 6: Aleks Sitkowski connected on 18-of-25 passes for 264 yards and three touchdowns, adding 90 rushing yards and two more scores, and Watchung Hills rolled to 3-0, The game was played at North Hunterdon despite originally slated for WHRHS, but moved when lightning delays made it impossible to get the game in, as Tozier Field’s lights are not operational. Jack Clintock caught seven passes for 192 yards and two scores, while Jack Arakelian, who forced a fumble Friday, also caught a TD pass. David Dubas and Matisse Kalnins also chipped in rushing scores for the Warriors. Tyler Anderson threw for 145 yards and a score for North Hunterdon (0-3), with Nick Ramaci pitching in five catches for 113 yards and a score for the Lions.

North Brunswick 23, Edison 16: Tamir Gladden-Boone rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries and Jack Garbolino and Samaad Hicks each had nine tackles and a fumble recovery as North Brunswick (2-0) pulled out the win. Garbolino also rushed in a short touchdown. Abdul Kargbo, Gladden-Boone (forced fumble), Logan Margulies and Jahir Dawud each had five tackles in the win and Anthony Walker added a sack. For Edison (1-2), Nyekir Eato rushed for 79 yards on 20 carries and a score. He also threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Ricky Harvey.
