Flau'jae Johnson guest speaker at Coastal Empire High School Sports Awards
Flau’jae Johnson, a member of LSU’s 2023 NCAA women’s basketball championship team and 2024 Second-Team All-SEC pick, is the guest speaker at the 2024 Coastal Empire High School Sports Awards, presented by Georgia Ports, on Friday, June 7, at the Johnny Mercer Theatre at the Savannah Civic Center.
The show is presented with the support of Chatham Orthopaedic Associates and WJCL 22 News.
Johnson is not only a dominant Division 1 basketball player, but a well-known musician with Roc Nation and a community leader. She became a household name as a freshman for LSU’s 2023 national champs, the first in school history. That year, she started in all 36 games, earning SEC Freshman of the Year honors and averaging 11 points and 5.9 rebounds.
She built off that last year, averaging 14.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.1 steals and 1.0 blocks per game.
Johnson came to LSU from Georgia, where she was one of the best high school players in the country. A four-star recruit, Johnson was named a McDonald’s All-American, Naismith All-American, and played in the Jordan Brand Classic, where she earned MVP honors. She was also the only female to play in the Iverson Classic.
Off the court, she appeared on America’s Got Talent (earning the coveted “Golden Buzzer”), and she signed a record deal with Jay Z’s Roc Nation label. A native of Savannah, she earned a key to the city and has an intersection named after her on Savannah’s south side.
As a testament to her community efforts, Johnson was also recently named Female Volunteer of the Year as part of LSU’s “The Mikey Awards” that recognize athletes for their community involvement.
During the live show, athletes of the year in 23 state-sanctioned sports will be honored. In addition, top teams, coaches and overall athletes will be honored as will a Courage Award winner. Nominated athletes who RSVP will receive a complimentary ticket to the event thanks to sponsors. Spring sports nominees will be announced in the next two weeks.
