Flag football enters second round: Breaking down Northeast Florida's FHSAA playoffs

The Florida High School Athletic Association continues flag football playoffs with Tuesday's second-round games. All schedules are as listed by the FHSAA but are subject to change.

All games 7 p.m. Tuesday unless noted

REGION 2-2A

Fletcher (11-3) at Fleming Island (16-0), 6:30 p.m.

The top-seeded Golden Eagles, who got three touchdowns last week from London Jenkins, meet the Gateway Conference runners-up and athletic Fletcher quarterback Jasmine Cross. Fleming Island won 20-7 last year in districts. The winner advances to an April 30 regional final against Navarre or Pace.

REGION 1-1A

Middleburg (9-5) at Florida High (12-1)

Defense alert: Florida High has shut out its last seven opponents, not allowing a point since March 26 against Tallahassee Lincoln. Middleburg's defense is also reliable, including 10 sacks so far from freshman Haven Lang. The winner plays April 30 against Choctawhatchee or Fort Walton Beach.

REGION 2-1A

Stanton (10-4) at Clay (11-1), 6 p.m.

Nearly perfect on defense (11 shutouts in 12 games), the Blue Devils can also put up plenty of points, with Teaghan Moses taking the snaps. Stanton forced four takeaways of its own during the first round, three of them interceptions by junior Catherine Brewer.

Paxon (13-3) at White (15-3)

Ed White running back Tyra Pierce (5) rushes for yardage after taking a pitch against Fletcher in the Gateway Conference girls flag football championship.

A good all-Duval County matchup. Some of Jacksonville's top all-around athletes are in action, including Paxon's Ansley Hicks (975 yards rushing, 11 TD) and the Commanders' Tyra Pierce (1,066 yards rushing, 11 TD). White has won eight in a row, including the Gateway Conference tournament.
