First Coast golfers Carson Brewer, Bryson Hughes advance to round of 32 in U.S. Junior Boys
The First Coast and South Georgia have a combined three players in the round of 32 in the U.S. Junior Boys at the Daniel Island Club Ralston Creek Course in Charleston, S.C.
Carson Brewer of Ponte Vedra Beach, Bryson Hughes of St. Johns and Jack Roberts of St. Mary's, Ga., all won their first-round matches on Wednesday.
Brewer topped Canadian Jordan Hwang 4 and 2; Hughes rallied from one down with four holes to play to topple Zihang Qui of China 3 and 2; and Roberts won the last two holes to edge Eric Lee of Fullerton, Calif., 1-up.
Roberts' caddie this week is Brewer's former teammate at Ponte Vedra High School, 2022 Times-Union boys golf player of the year Brock Blais. Brewer and Blais helped the Sharks win their eighth state golf championship and sixth in a row, both Florida records.
Jackson Byrd of St. Simons Island, Ga., lost his first-round match 6 and 5 to Bryan Kim of Brookeville, Md.
In Thursday's round of 32, Brewer will play Bill Davis of Spring Valley, Calif., at 8:40 a.m.; Hughes faces Jacob Modleski of Noblesville, Ind., at 8:50 a.m. and Roberts plays Zwqian Fang of China at 9:10 a.m.
The quarterfinals will be played on Thursday afternoon.
