Fast starts guide L-S boys to trio of SICL wins

Jan. 26—SULLY — A fast start was all the Lynnville-Sully boys' basketball team needed against Montezuma on Monday.

But it also forced 22 turnovers, seven players scored at least three points and the Hawks scored a season sweep over the Braves following a 55-38 home win during South Iowa Cedar League play.

It was the Hawks' first season sweep over Montezuma since 2018.

"The guys played four quarters of tough defense," L-S head boys' basketball coach Nick Harthoorn said. "We were able to win the turnover margin by taking better care of the basketball in the second half. As the game went on, the boys did a nice job of swinging the ball which resulted in some quality looks at basket."

Lynnville-Sully led 15-5 after one quarter and outscored the Braves 15-9 in the third. The Hawks had a one-point advantage in the other two frames.

Lucas Sieck led L-S with a career-high 13 points and he added three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Mitchell Miller also tallied 17 points and two steals.

Dawson James registered eight points and five rebounds, Carson Maston chipped in three points, seven boards, three assists and two steals and Klayton Van Dyke posted five points and seven rebounds.

Corder Noun Harder contributed six points and seven assists, Keegan DeWitt finished with two rebounds and three steals, Hendrick Lowry put in three points and Jack Bowlin grabbed two rebounds.

The Hawks shot 41.5 percent from the floor, made 8-of-26 from 3-point range and connected on 3-of-7 from the free-throw line. They committed nine turnovers and out-rebounded Montezuma 31-27.

Brady Boulton led Montezuma (9-6, 8-5) with 17 points, while Garrett Watts finished with six points and seven boards.

The Braves shot 28.6 percent from the floor, made 7-of-25 from 3 and connected on 7-of-12 from the free-throw line.

Lynnville-Sully 74, Colfax-Mingo 24

SULLY — A 30-point first quarter got the Hawks off on the right foot and they never looked back during a 74-24 home win over Colfax-Mingo in SICL play on Tuesday.

Lynnville-Sully led 30-2 after one, shot 63 percent from the floor and won its ninth straight game. It was the Hawks' eighth consecutive victory over the Tigerhawks.

"The guys started the game with good energy. We executed well on the defensive end," Harthoorn said. "We did a nice job moving the ball offensively, which resulted in a lot of quality shots."

Miller led the Hawks with 22 points, four rebounds, three assists and four steals and James added 12 points and five rebounds.

Noun Harder had seven points, two rebounds, six assists and two steals, Van Dyke added eight points and three blocks and Lowry registered seven points, five boards and three assists.

Maston posted six points and six rebounds, Bowlin had five points, two rebounds and three assists, Kellan Hill put in six points and DeWitt swiped two steals. Sieck finished with two rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Lynnville-Sully was 8-of-20 from 3 and 8-of-18 from the foul line. The Hawks turned the ball over 12 times.

Colfax-Mingo (4-10, 3-8) got seven points from Joe Earles and Xavier Woods contributed five points, three rebounds and two assists.

Isaiah Lewis and Brandon Kite both scored four points, while Konner Dalton swiped three steals.

The Tigerhawks shot 29.7 percent from the floor, made 2-of-14 from 3 and missed both of their free throw attempts. They also turned the ball over 21 times.

Lynnville-Sully 86, Tri-County 19

SULLY — Another 30-point first quarter and a 54-point first half helped the Hawks cruise past Tri-County on Jan. 20.

James and Maston both scored a career high for points, L-S dominated the boards and turned the ball over only four times during an 86-19 home win in SICL play.

The Hawks led 30-7 after one and outscored the Trojans 24-6 in the second, 17-3 in the third and 15-3 in the fourth.

"We played with good energy today," Harthoorn said. "That energy created a lot of turnovers and offense for us. We did an excellent job of taking care of the basketball and sharing it. The 22 assists to four turnovers is a great ratio."

James put in a career-best 19 points, grabbed five rebounds and swiped three steals and Maston added a career-best 14 points with nine rebounds and three assists.

Van Dyke tallied 10 points and two rebounds, Miller contributed nine points, six assists and four steals and Bowlin collected eight points and eight rebounds.

DeWitt posted eight points, six boards and two steals, Sieck finished with five points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals and Lowry tallied three points, two rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Noun Harder dished out four assists and swiped three steals, Hill grabbed four rebounds and Connor Deal scored six points.

L-S shot 49.4 percent from the floor despite making 2-of-20 from 3. The Hawks were 4-of-10 from the foul line and out-rebounded Tri-County 46-17.

The victory was the Hawks' 22nd straight against the Trojans and they are 24-2 in the series since 2006.

Sean McCulloch led Tri-County (0-13, 0-10) with nine points. The Trojans shot 33.3 percent from the floor, made 3-of-11 from 3 and missed both of their free throw attempts. They also turned the ball over 33 times.

Lynnville-Sully 54, HLV 29

VICTOR — Playing in their first game since January 6, the Hawks came out of the gates slow on Jan. 19 but dominated the second half during a 54-29 road win over HLV.

L-S led 9-3 after one and 15-12 at halftime but outscored the Warriors 39-18 in the second half of their SICL matchup.

It was eighth straight win in the series for the Hawks and they are 29-1 in the last 30 against HLV.

"The guys picked up the defensive intensity in the second half and that got us going offensively," Harthoorn said. "We were able to control the boards on both ends of the floor, which provided us a few more opportunities than our opponent."

Miller led the Hawks with 16 points and three rebounds, DeWitt tallied eight points, eight rebounds and five steals and James posted six points and six rebounds.

Maston tallied five points, nine rebounds and three steals, Van Dyke had five points and six boards and Noun Harder added six points, three rebounds and two assists.

Lowry pitched in five points, three assists and three steals, Sieck contributed two rebounds, four assists and two steals and Bowlin scored three points.

Lynnville-Sully shot 40 percent from the floor, made 6-of-25 from 3 and connected on 8-of-15 from the foul line. The Hawks out-rebounded the Warriors 40-22 and turned the ball over 14 times.

Peyton Roth led HLV (4-9, 4-8) with nine points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals and Boston York tallied eight points and six rebounds.

The Warriors shot 23.7 percent from the floor, made 6-of-28 from 3 and buried 5-of-8 from the foul line. They committed 21 turnovers.
