Looking to remain atop the division, the Atlanta Falcons will need to execute on Sunday…

The Atlanta Falcons (2-1) currently sit in first place atop the NFC South division. Visiting Sunday will be the reigning champions of the past three seasons in the Carolina Panthers. Atlanta was embarrassed by Carolina last year before striking revenge in the Georgia Dome and handing Carolina their only regular season loss. A bitter rivalry will be renewed as the Falcons look to accomplish these goals in order to secure victory.

1. Apply Pressure on the Quarterback

Atlanta’s difficulty to administer pressure on opposing quarterbacks has carried over from last season. In 2015, the Falcons only reached Cam Newton four times in two games, but one was the strip-sack to seal the victory in Atlanta by Vic Beasley. This year, Newton has been sacked 12 times in three games, resulting in two losses. Atlanta’s key to victory lies in making Newton uncomfortable in the pocket.

2. Keep Pace

It’s no secret that the Falcons defense has struggled this season. Surrendering 12 touchdown drives of over 75-yards, the Panthers are going to score and the Falcons’ offense must keep pace. Quarterback Matt Ryan and company cannot afford to fall behind by multiple scores in this game. If Carolina scores, the Falcons must answer immediately in order keep it close until the fourth quarter. Likewise, if Atlanta is up multiple scores, they must continue to pressure the Panthers and not allow the outcome to rest in the hands of the defense.

3. Special Teams Play

As important as keeping pace, special teams play will be key on Sunday. Often in close games, a special teams play will decide the outcome. Last week, the Minnesota Vikings were able to return a punt for a touchdown that pulled them within two prior to the half. Despite still trailing, the touchdown paralyzed Carolina as they had just missed a field goal of their own on an earlier possession and failed to score again. The ability to not only score points, or lack thereof, coupled with field position will be a factor in what is expected to be a tight ballgame.
