Faces off the field: Hendrickson outside hitter Mia McCurley has her future planned out

All about Mia: Cellphones and real estate

Tell us something about you that most people don't know.

I am the HHS president of Unified Champions. I love creating a feeling of acceptance for those with special needs. I am also a member of PALS at Hendrickson and a volunteer at Meals on Wheels and the Special Olympics.

What do you plan to do after you graduate?

I plan to continue playing volleyball in college. There are several I am considering, but (I) have not verbally committed yet. I will study business and plan on majoring in marketing. My goal is to be a luxury real estate broker.

What do you consider to be the world's great invention?

The telephone. Look how far we have come since the first one. Alexander Graham Bell had no idea where he was taking us when he invented it. The world revolves around it now.

What is your favorite app?

I would probably say YouTube is my favorite because I can watch a variety of videos from education to volleyball and everything in between.

If you could attend any concert, whom would you see?

Coldplay. I love the atmosphere and energy/vibe they create. The light shows are phenomenal and correlate with the music.

Volleyball is Mia McCurley's true passion

Tell me something about the first time you played competitive volleyball.

I was in a recreational league when I was 12 years old. Even though my team never won a game, it made me realize that volleyball was what I really enjoyed and wanted to pursue.

Do you have any game-day rituals?

Before every game I pray for the teams and coaches. ... Also, on special games, I drink mango tea for a good source of energy and to hype me up before each game.

Did you play other sports when you were younger?

Volleyball is the only sport I have played.  My mom, both of my aunts and my older sister were all cheerleaders in school, and I wanted to follow in their footsteps. However, when the time came in middle school to try out, I had a change of mind.

What happened next?

My mom put me in a volleyball recreational league at Clay Madsen Rec Center, and it all just started falling into place. Six years later, playing school and club, I can say with certainty that volleyball is my passion.

If you had a choice of being all-state in volleyball or valedictorian of your class, which would you choose?

I would choose valedictorian because I prioritize my education over everything else. While being selected as an all-state athlete is an honor, working hard to earn top honors of my class academically would give me more of a sense of accomplishment.

Dream dinner: Laughs are on the menu

If you could have dinner with four people in the history of the world, who would they be?

I'm going to choose Jesus, Lana Del Rey, Adam Sandler and (Texas volleyball player) Asjia O'Neal.

Why Adam Sandler?

I love talking to people who make me laugh. Laughter makes the world go around.
