Everything Texas A&M TE Max Wright had to say before the Aggies’ 13th spring football practice

As spring football begins to wind down for Texas A&M a few key members of the football program took a few minutes to sit down with the media ahead of the team’s 13th practice.

In addition to head coach Jimbo Fisher and safety Demani Richardson, tight end Max Wright answered questions for roughly 11 minutes on Tuesday. With the Aggies entering a pivotal 2023 season in a matter of months, Wright had plenty of topics to touch on from how Bobby Petrino utilizes tight ends, how Conner Weigman and Max Johnson make each other better, to the promising upside of the offensive line and its depth.

The full video of Max Wright’s press conference can be found below, as well as our breakdown of each key topic covered during his session with the media.

Wright is confident that this team won't let last season's struggles carry over into 2023

“We’re not letting things slide last year like we might’ve done last year.”

The Aggies tight end gave ample praise to both signal-callers in the locker room, as well as shedding light on what it's like to learn under Bobby Petrino

“Max (Johnson) and Conner (Weigman) are awesome, and they push each other every day. It’s helpful to have guys as selfless as they are.”

“Petrino puts a lot on his quarterbacks… Trying to relearn offenses is tough, but they have been killing it.”

Speaking of Petrino, Wright is loving what he brings to the offense and in particular how the tight end plays a pivotal role

“The offense the (Bobby) Petrino brings… I love it. It’s dynamic in terms of how you use the tight end.”

“It’s pretty similar. Getting the tight end in the passing game, but I like how he uses it for deception.”

Wright offered his thoughts on potentially playing a different school in the spring game, though he sees the value in that potential scenario

“I did not know about that. The guys would definitely be up for that… That would be helpful to face an opponent that’s not in our locker room.”

In getting a bit more granular on Petrino's offense, Wright really loves the different formations and personnel groupings that the tight end is part of

“We have different personnels, we have three tight ends on the field at one time. Sometimes, creating some mismatches in terms of blocking schemes, being able to utilize two tight ends on the ball while also having a tight end in the backfield at the fullback spot.

I think the way he uses the tight end in the offense is really versatile and I really love it.”

Wright also praised fellow teammates Jake Johnson and Donovan Green in speaking to their growth since their freshman season

“I love Jake (Johnson), love Donovan (Green), they’re both awesome guys. In terms of their growth I think that just like you said the vocal aspect out on there on the field, these guys aren’t freshmen anymore. These guys have really stepped into their role like hey, we’re some guys that they’re going to look to not just be parts of the offense this year but be center points of it.”

On hearing the news that Matthew Wykoff is entering the portal, and the potential he sees from the offensive line and their depth

“I’m really excited, those guys have taken some really good steps. Obviously, losing Matthew is tough, he’s one of my really good friends, I love him and I hope the best for him wherever he goes.

But from a depth standpoint..some of those guys having more experience than what we had last year is huge.

But I also look at some of these younger guys that are coming in. Chase Bisontis is going to be an absolutely key factor to this offensive line. He’s going to shock a lot of people this year in how he plays and he doesn’t play like a freshman, he’s going to be really good.”

The frustrations of last year have many of these players coming into spring with a chip on their shoulder to make sure it doesn't happen again in 2023

“Obviously last season was really frustrating, I think many guys come into this spring with a chip on their shoulder. No one ever wants to have the year that we had last year. You know, it was embarrassing on a lot of fronts, and I think guys are coming into this spring with that mindset.

There’s a little bit more rah-rah out there on the field with guys getting into each other like hey, that’s the same stuff that happened last year, and we allowed that, and look what it led us to.

You see that this spring with how guys are pushing each other, how guys are holding these younger guys accountable, and just looking to try and build the best program that we can.”
