This year sees Manchester City try to defend their crown and claim a historic fourth title in succession. Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering City, who also won the Champions League and FA Cup last season, will have to see off Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and the rest to claim an unprecedented sixth league title in seven years.

Meanwhile Luton Town are making their first appearance in the Premier League, having risen from non-league in an incredible decade of progress. They followed Championship winners Burnley and second-placed Sheffield United in earning promotion to the top flight.

Everton FC 1 - 3 Manchester City FC

Everton vs Manchester City

22:16

Manchester City return to winning ways in the Premier League as they come from behind to triumph 3-1 over Everton at Goodison Park. Guardiola’s side showed some signs of a Club World Cup hangover as they fell behind to Harrison’s well-taken 29th-minute opener after McNeil capitalised on a Rodri error to tee up that goal. However, the defending English champions responded in scintillating fashion in the second half as Foden rattled in an equaliser from range before Alvarez edged the visitors ahead with a spot-kick. Onana was adjudged to have handled for that penalty decision when blocking Ake’s effort and Pickford almost denied the City forward from 12 yards, too, but the away side did not look back as Silva extended their lead with just four minutes remaining. The Citizens leapfrog Tottenham to go into fourth but still trail top-flight leaders Liverpool by five points, while Everton remain just one clear of 18th-placed Luton Town, who are in the relegation zone but have a game in hand. Sheffield United visit City on Saturday, while the Toffees travel to Wolves on the same day. That is all for now, until next time! Goodbye and thanks for following.

Everton vs Manchester City

22:12

FULL-TIME: EVERTON 1-3 MANCHESTER CITY

Everton vs Manchester City

22:11

Dyche's hosts have looked somewhat off the pace since Foden's equaliser, although that has more to do with City's quality rather than their Everton's incompetence. The City supporters are enjoying their time on Merseyside as they coast towards 2024 with another top-flight victory.

Everton vs Manchester City

22:09

FODEN AGAIN! The City midfielder dances from inside his own half, gliding forward before attempting to catch Pickford off his line with a lofted left-footed attempt. The Everton goalkeeper is not surprised, though, and backtracks before parrying away a smart save to the swerving effort.

Everton vs Manchester City

22:08

Goodison Park is slowly emptying out as the home crowd leave with little to celebrate. By contrast, Guardiola's name echoes around the stands from the away end as last season's treble winners head for a first victory back on English soil after their Club World Cup win in Jeddah.

Everton vs Manchester City

22:07

OFF THE WOODWORK! Ederson launches a free-kick long from deep as the fourth official indicates six minutes of additional time. Alvarez works it well for Foden, who makes it into the area before his left-footed strike crashes into the post when looking for the top-right corner. The City forward has been imperious at Goodison Park and almost grabbed a deserved second goal there.

Everton vs Manchester City

22:06

Silva has scored and assisted for a sixth time in a Premier League match, with all six coming away from home – he's done so twice at Goodison Park (also in February 2021). The Portugal star may be the toast of the blue side of Manchester after this one!

Everton vs Manchester City

22:05

Pickford has made a lot of good saves to keep Everton in this game, but the blame falls at the feet of the home side's goalkeeper for Silva's goal. Dyche's side will not find a way back into this clash now as they head towards back-to-back defeats in the Premier League, and three across all competitions after their EFL Cup quarter-final loss to Fulham on penalties.

Everton vs Manchester City

22:01

Goal Bernardo Mota Veiga de Carvalho e Silva

Everton vs Manchester City

22:00

OVER! Alvarez, scorer of City's second goal, takes the ball onto his left foot inside the area before angling a hooked strike just over Pickford's goal. The Argentina forward has been a real problem when receiving possession at his feet and turning to run at the Everton defence.

Everton vs Manchester City

21:59

Grealish has scored three goals in his last three Premier League games for City, as many as he had in his previous 23. It’s the first time in his top-flight career he’s scored in three consecutive appearances. However, he also has as many yellow cards in 21 games this season in all competitions as he received in 50 matches last season (six yellows).

Everton vs Manchester City

21:58

McNeil clips a delicate cross but his floated delivery curls only into the chest of Ederson, who takes his time to collect by goading Calvert-Lewin towards the ball. Time ticks on at Goodison Park.

Everton vs Manchester City

21:58

Again from near the halfway line, Pickford launches a free-kick long but Akanji heads clear under little pressure from any Everton player. This could be route-one football from the hosts, who have just under 10 minutes to find an equaliser.

Everton vs Manchester City

21:56

Yellow Card Jack Peter Grealish

Everton vs Manchester City

21:54

Alvarez now has 10 goals and seven assists in his last 22 appearances in all competitions for City. In fact, since the start of last season, only Haaland (85 – 71 goals, 14 assists) has more goals and assists in all competitions for Man City than the Argentina forward (28 goals, 12 assists).

Everton vs Manchester City

21:54

Substitution Jack David Harrison Arnaut Danjuma Adam Groeneveld

Everton vs Manchester City

21:53

Alvarez, still a bit dazed by Tarkowski's well-timed sliding challenge, returns to the Goodison Park pitch to a chorus of jeers. Branthwaite then fells Silva with a late lunge and goes into the referee's book. Tensions are rising on Merseyside!

Everton vs Manchester City

21:52

Ouch! Walker powers down the right-hand side on the counter-attack before Tarkowski thunders into Alvarez with a crunching sliding tackle. Everton begrudgingly kick the ball out so the City forward can receive treatment, much to the annoyance of the home crowd.

Everton vs Manchester City

21:50

CHANCE! City are furious as they protest for an offside flag that never goes up. Harrison speeds down the right flank before whipping across for Calvert-Lewin, who looks to dink around Ederson but sends his right-footed effort just wide to the right of goal. A huge opportunity goes begging for Everton.

Everton vs Manchester City

21:49

City play out from the back with beautiful elegance as Everton race up to press. Grealish is then caught late by Tarkowski, staying down as the referee waves play on with an advantage. The Everton centre-back has perhaps let his frustration out on the winger with that challenge.

Everton vs Manchester City

21:46

Silva continues to pull the strings in midfield as the Portugal international glides around the Goodison Park pitch. He has completed the joint-most passes in the opposition half (41, level with Walker) in another impressive performance.

Everton vs Manchester City

21:45

Dyche's side have to find a way to chase this game, with their happiness to sit in and hit on the counter-attack no longer a viable option. For now, City look the more likely to add another goal.

Everton vs Manchester City

21:42

Everton have won their last two Premier League home games, beating Newcastle United 3-0 and Chelsea 2-0. They last won more consecutively at Goodison Park in September 2021 (four), while they last did so without conceding in August 2019 (five). The Toffees have a long way to fight their way back here, however.

Everton vs Manchester City

21:40

Substitution Matheus Luiz Nunes Mateo Kovačić

Everton vs Manchester City

21:40

Substitution Norberto Bercique Gomes Betuncal Dominic Nathaniel Calvert-Lewin

Everton vs Manchester City

21:38

Penalty Goal Julián Álvarez

Everton vs Manchester City

21:38

PENALTY! Alvarez whips in the left-sided corner before Pickford punches away. Foden smashes a first-time effort that is deflected out to Ake, whose close-range effort is blocked by a couple of Everton bodies. The referee pauses before deciding, perhaps on the consultation of his assistant, that Onana has handled when sliding in and awards a spot-kick. The VAR sticks with the on-field decision and City will have a chance to take the lead...

Everton vs Manchester City

21:38

Yellow Card Jordan Lee Pickford

Everton vs Manchester City

21:36

GOOD STRIKE! Silva hovers over the free-kick but Alvarez is the man to take. The City forward whips over the wall, aiming for the top-left corner, but Pickford pushes over with an assured save.

Everton vs Manchester City

21:35

Gomes knows what he is doing as he clips the ankles of Grealish, earning a booking for the Everton midfielder as well as offering City a free-kick in a promising wide position.

Everton vs Manchester City

21:34

Will Dyche turn to Calvert-Lewin soon? Beto has ran himself into the ground and has worked with very little service. That decision can wait, though, as Patterson turns behind for a corner from Grealish's cross.

Everton vs Manchester City

21:34

Yellow Card Manuel Obafemi Akanji

Everton vs Manchester City

21:30

Foden has scored four Premier League goals against Everton only netting more against Brighton in the competition (six). The England international has single-handedly dragged his side back into this contest on Merseyside.

Everton vs Manchester City

21:30

CHANCE! Foden is buzzing all around the Goodison Park pitch and drills a low cross towards the near post. Alvarez touches just wide to the left of Pickford's goal and City are also incensed as they feel the referee has made the wrong decision by awarding a goal-kick. The away side are rampant and searching for the all-important third goal.

Everton vs Manchester City

21:27

Goal Philip Walter Foden

Everton vs Manchester City

21:27

Close! Nunes drifts into space on the right of the area, receiving possession from Foden before drilling across the face of goal. Tarkowski steps in at the vital moment to hook a last-ditch clearance behind for a corner.

Everton vs Manchester City

21:26

Beto overpowers Akanji once more and wins a free-kick near the halfway line. Pickford comes all the way up to take this one and it is going to be another aerial challenge for City to deal with.

Everton vs Manchester City

21:25

Branthwaite stays down after an aerial challenge with Alvarez, who appeared to catch the centre-back a little late with a loose arm. The Everton centre-back is fine to continue, though, and has been incredibly impressive thus far.

Everton vs Manchester City

21:23

Gvardiol and Silva both keep City attacks alive before Rodri hooks a wasteful left-footed half-volley over from the edge of the Everton box. The Spain midfielder is still out to atone for his first-half mistake that led to Harrison's well-taken opener.

Everton vs Manchester City

21:22

Beto makes the most of a hopeful McNeil pass and wins a throw-in by ushering Akanji out the way. The Everton striker has done all the hard work for the hosts after replacing the goal-shy Calvert-Lewin up top.

Everton vs Manchester City

21:20

Man City have lost just two of their last 11 Premier League games when trailing at the break (W6 D3), with those defeats coming at Tottenham in February and Wolves in September. Can they manage a response at Goodison Park? We’re about to find out as the second half gets underway!

Everton vs Manchester City

21:08

Everton are undefeated in three Premier League games this season when leading at half-time (two wins, one draw) and Dyche will fancy his side's chances of defending their advantage in front of a vociferous Goodison faithful. City must up the tempo and find a way without talisman Haaland, who has been a sore miss for the underwhelming visitors. At 1-0, it will only take one moment of magic to change this game, however.

Everton vs Manchester City

21:06

The plan from Dyche is working so far as Everton head in 1-0 up against Man City at half-time at Goodison Park. Pickford produced fine saves to deny Alvarez twice, as well as Grealish, before McNeil capitalised on a Rodri error to tee up Harrison's 29th-minute opener. The resurgent Toffees have their tails up and, for now at least, Guardiola's side have fail to muster a compelling response.

Everton vs Manchester City

21:05

HALF-TIME: EVERTON 1-0 MANCHESTER CITY

Everton vs Manchester City

21:04

Walker drills a low cross at McNeil, who blocks behind for a corner. City go short before working it out towards the edge of the area before Foden is forced backwards. That is a morale victory for Everton after they push the visitors all the way back to Ederson.

Everton vs Manchester City

21:04

Everton are in survival mode as Nunes and Silva look to breach the home defence. Beto hoists a no-nonsense clearance into the vacant City half as Dyche's men withstand another barrage.

Everton vs Manchester City

21:02

There will be three minutes of additional time to end this half at Goodison Park, owing to the goal and Stones' injury. Guardiola will be having strong words at half-time at this rate.

Everton vs Manchester City

21:00

Rodri is both high and late with a lunging tackle on Garner, who stays down for a brief moment after an ill-timed challenge. The referee opts for a warning towards the Spain midfielder.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:59

Substitution John Stones Joško Gvardiol

Everton vs Manchester City

20:57

Stones is still hobbling around from the earlier Beto challenge as Tarkowski hooks a clearance out of play. It looks like Guardiola will be forced to bring on Gvardiol for the away side, who are already without De Bruyne, Doku and Haaland.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:56

Alvarez whips a wide free-kick towards the far post, where Rodri flicks on. A slight touch off of Tarkowski brings a City corner, despite Everton and the home supporters' protests. The resulting set-piece comes to nothing, however.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:54

Yellow Card Nathan Kenneth Patterson

Everton vs Manchester City

20:54

Some football supporters may question the ongoing persistence for officials to wave play on before belatedly flagging for an offside decision. There was no malice in Beto's collision with Stones, but that could have been avoided if for an earlier refereeing call. Fortunately for City, their centre-back trudges towards the touchline and should be fine to continue.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:53

Great tackle! Pickford launches long for Beto, who bundles towards the area before Stones produces a brilliant last-ditch intervention to thwart the striker. The City centre-back stays down injured, which is frustrating for the visitors as a belated offside flag goes up anyway. The England defender will require medical attention.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:51

City have conceded first in four of their last five Premier League games, having gone 1-0 down in just three of their first 13 games this term. The visitors must find a response on Merseyside once again.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:50

GREAT SAVE! 'Evertoooooon' rings out around Goodison Park from the home supporters as the hosts win a corner on the left-hand side. Gomes delivers and the ball is cleared as far as Harrison, who curls an outside-of-the-boot left-footed strike towards the top-left corner. Ederson stretches as far as his reach can take him to tip over.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:49

WASTEFUL! The away side pin Everton back as Ake nips in and offloads for Grealish, who nutmegs a Toffee to lay back towards the edge of the area. Rodri, the man at fault for Harrison's opener, slashes a miscued right-footed effort well wide of Pickford's goal. A great chance goes amiss for the defending English champions.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:47

This is great tactical work from Dyche. Everton have dug deep, sitting in before waiting for their chance when City make a mistake. Guardiola's side have it all to do now, otherwise they will be heading into the new year with defeat.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:45

Assist Dwight James Matthew McNeil

Everton vs Manchester City

20:44

Goal Jack David Harrison

Everton vs Manchester City

20:43

Grealish angles a well-weighted left-wing cross to Silva, who takes a touch down before curling a horrendous left-footed effort comfortably into the Goodison Park stand. The Portugal international will be disappointed with that one.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:42

A wayward Akanji pass back to Ederson gifts Everton an avoidable corner. McNeil swings in the right-sided set-piece but Ake clears well when under pressure from Garner inside the six-yard area.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:41

City have won just one of their last six Premier League games (D4 L1), coming from behind to beat Luton 2-1 earlier this month. It’s the first time they’ve had a run of just one win in six league games since February/March 2016 (W1 D1 L4). Guardiola's treble winners have started in dominant fashion here, though.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:40

ANOTHER GOOD STOP! Everton are hanging in as Nunes is felled but the referee plays advantage. Grealish progresses towards the left of the area before toe-poking a right-footed shot low towards the bottom-right corner. Pickford gets down well to his left to parry away before the hosts withstand another period of pressure.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:38

Akanji completed all 23 of his passes in the opening 20 minutes of this game, the most of any player with a 100 per cent success rate. City's centre-back impressing will not bother Dyche, though, with Everton content to invite their visitors forward before pouncing on the counter-attack.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:35

Gomes hovers over the wide free-kick before delivering towards the far post, where a brave Ederson punch thwarts the incoming Branthwaite. The home crowd are up on their feet as Everton try to place some pressure on City before a wayward pass ends any hope of another attack.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:34

McNeil launches long down the left-hand side before Akanji needlessly drags the industrious Beto to the floor. Referee Brooks blows for a home free-kick and Goodison Park awaits the set-piece opportunity.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:32

Everton have won just one of their last 20 Premier League games against Man City (D5 L14) and are winless in 12 against them (D2 L10) since a 4-0 victory in January 2017. Dyche's side remain level, at least for now, though.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:31

DOUBLE SAVE! The away side catch Everton on the break as Alvarez touches through for Nunes, whose right-footed drive is kicked away by the impressive Pickford. Alvarez is first to the rebound but his first-time attempt is tipped behind by the England goalkeeper. A fine double stop keeps the visitors at bay!

Everton vs Manchester City

20:29

CLOSE! Alvarez hunts down a long ball as Tarkowski unconvincingly heads away. Foden pounces on the chance, driving forward towards the right of the area before slicing a right-footed strike just over Pickford's goal when looking for the top-right corner. City are ramping up the pressure at Goodison.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:27

A long Gomes free-kick is dealt well with by Rodri before City clear from the resulting throw-in. Onana then angles through for Beto but Ederson races off his line to intervene in front of the striker.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:27

Stones clumsily fells Garner, who wins a free-kick near the halfway line to stem the increasing pressure on Everton. The hosts will send this one long to test Ederson and the City defence.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:25

WIDE! Silva works it short from the right-sided corner before possession works its way to Walker, who arrows a long-range right-footed strike towards the bottom-right corner. A deflection by the wall of blue Everton shirts sends the effort just wide of Pickford's target.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:24

Foden is clipped in midfield by Garner, and with Brooks in close proximity, the referee is quick to blow for a free-kick. Down the right flank, Branthwaite has to cover to turn behind for the first corner of the game as Nunes lurks.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:23

Walker, an unusual creative outlet, slams into the feet of Silva, who is unable to turn at the near post as Mykolenko clears the danger. The adverse weather conditions have not bothered City so far, and the away side are well on top.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:20

SAVE! A fine diagonal pass from Walker finds Grealish, who ghosts inside before prodding through for Alvarez. The City forward pokes a quick-thinking shot towards the centre of goal, where Pickford reacts quickly to parry away a convincing save with his chest.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:19

Rodri powers through the middle after Beto fails to hold up the ball before City revert back into a settled spell of possession. Guardiola's visitors will look to take the sting out of this clash when they have it at their feet.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:17

Stretching to reach an early cross from Patterson, Beto heads harmlessly wide from inside the City area. Everton will not shy away from a lofted delivery or two as they look to bombard their visitors and utilise Beto's height.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:17

After a minute of respect to reflect on the past year, referee John Brooks gets this Premier League clash under the Goodison Park lights started! Expect noise, and a lot of it, from the vociferous home supporters to bring in the close of 2023.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:13

Man City have won their last six away league games against Everton, scoring at least three times in four of those. It’s more victories than they’d managed in their previous 26 visits to Goodison Park (W5 D7 L14). Can Guardiola’s side continue that impressive run? We’re about to find out as kick-off approaches…

Everton vs Manchester City

20:05

Guardiola makes two alterations to the Club World Cup-winning starting lineup. Ruben Dias misses out entirely as Akanji replaces him to partner former Toffee Stones at centre-back, while Lewis drops down to the substitutes list for Nunes to come in. Alvarez starts up top as talismanic Norway forward Erling Haaland remains out with a troublesome foot injury. Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku are the other notable longer-term absentees for the visitors, although Rodri is fit to start after an injury scare against Fluminense.

Everton vs Manchester City

20:05

Having not scored since the end of October against West Ham, Calvert-Lewin is dropped down to the bench as Dyche prefers Beto to lead the line. That is one of two changes, with the other enforced as Gueye misses out through injury and Gomes – who scored against Tottenham last time out – takes his place for a first start of the season. Abdoulaye Doucoure is another midfield absentee due to injury, while the fit-again Coleman returns to the bench.

While a December trip to Saudi Arabia proved fruitful for City, who won the FIFA Club World Cup for the first time in their history by defeating Urawa Reds and Fluminense, Pep Guardiola’s side returned to England six points adrift of Premier League leaders Arsenal. That deficit extended to eight points as Liverpool surged to the top-flight summit with Tuesday’s 2-0 victory over Burnley, while the defending English champions still trail Aston Villa by four and fourth-placed Tottenham by two. The Manchester club were held to a last-gasp 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace in their last league outing and must improve if they are to leave Merseyside with a positive result.

Everton vs Manchester City

19:45

Everton saw a four-game winning streak in the Premier League come to an end as Son Heung-min and Richarlison – the latter against his former club – did the damage in a 2-1 victory for Tottenham last Saturday. The Toffees still sit a point clear of 18th-placed Luton Town, who were 3-2 victors at Sheffield United on Tuesday, despite their 10-point deduction for breaches of the league’s financial rulings – a decision that has been appealed by the club. Sean Dyche will want his side to focus on matters in their own hands, though, as they prepare an attempt to overthrow the reigning top-flight champions at Goodison Park.
