Ellet, Twinsburg, CVCA, Walsh earn baseball wins; Norton, Revere, Stow triumph in softball

BASEBALL

Ellet 3, Firestone 0

Chase Merring pitched a shutout with 13 strikeouts to lead host Ellet (5-3, 3-0 City Series) to a win Friday. Merring allowed one hit and two walks.

Ellet scored all three runs in the fourth inning. TJ Brown hit a double and Cameron Allen was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Devin Huwig smacked a double that scored Brown and Merring followed with a single that scored Allen and Huwig.

Friday's win came after Allen pitched a shutout with 10 strikeouts and hit a two-run home run on April 13 in a 4-0 win at Firestone.

Ellet coach John Sarver praised his seniors and juniors for going "through tough times last year as juniors and sophomores" on a below .500 team and being able to "mature as people and also ball-players this year."

Manchester 15, Orrville 0

Owen Canter pitched a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts and five walks to lead visiting Manchester (5-3, 3-2 PAC-7) past Orrville (5-4, 3-4).

Canter also hit a single and a double, batted in four runs and scored two runs. Riley Soles contributed a single, a triple, two RBI and three runs for Manchester, which scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Barberton 6, Wadsworth 5

Camren Vessels hit a home run and a single and had four runs batted in for the visiting Magics. Barberton's Michael Kuziak had three hits and scored two runs and Brennen Watson had two hits.

Twinsburg 3, Stow 1

Stow was one out from a home shutout victory, but some ill-timed misfortune sunk the Bulldogs. An error led to three unearned Twinsburg runs in the seventh inning. The error allowed Twinsburg's Tyler Mason and Jack Lyden to score, and Reggie Bussey scored on a wild pitch.

Tiger reliever Justin Adkins (2-1) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to pick up the win after starting pitcher Jeremy Soppel allowed one earned run in 5.2 innings of work.

Stow reliever Josh Kupetz (1-2) was the hard-luck loser.

CVCA 11, Canton South 0

Otto Rogers (2-0) allowed one hit in five innings of work to lead the host Royals (11-1). His battery mate Trevor Vojtkofsky hit a single, double and triple, drove in four runs and scored three runs. Jules Hernandez and Joey Lehner each batted in two runs.

Walsh Jesuit 9, Strongsville 5

Pitcher Andrew Gormley earned a win and Joey Canzoni hit a single, scored a run, had an RBI and recorded a save to lead WJ (8-2) in the Akron RubberDucks High School Showcase at Canal Park.

WJ's Henry Kaczmar contributed two singles and three runs batted in and Kasey Kish had two hits and scored one run. Mason Eckelman, Gabe Gardner, Justin Bremner, John Simecek and Ryan DePerro each hit a single and had one RBI.

Norton 3, Woodridge 0

Daniel Hopkins pitched a three-hit shutout to lead visiting Norton. Tanner Cool (three singles, one RBI, one run) and George Antal (single, double, run) led the offense.

Green 3, Austintown Fitch 1

Pitcher Lucas Ickes earned the win, hit a double and had two runs batted in to lead the Bulldogs. Brady Rollyson hit two singles and recorded a save.

SOFTBALL

Stow 6, North Royalton 2

The Bulldogs (4-6, 4-3) plated two runs in the first and second innings and rolled to a Suburban League National Conference win over the Bears (4-3, 2-2).

With Aubrey Mansfield (two singles, RBI, run), Emma Oshel (single, double), Casey Marousch (single, double, run) and Kelly Winkler (two singles, two runs) leading the way, Makayla Huddleston (4-6, 12 strikeouts) settled in for a complete game win.

“I think it’s always important to get a lead right away,” Stow coach Cyla Geopfert said. “I’m happy we actually came out today and hit the ball. I think it definitely helped (Huddleston’s) confidence. You could see she really had control of the game.”

North Royalton only notched five hits, three of which came from Mia Maddamma.

Revere 4, Barberton 3

Host Revere (6-2, 6-0) took the lead with a three-run sixth inning to remain undefeated in the Suburban League American Conference. Beckie Gayner (1-1) earned the win and joined Paige Kelley with two singles apiece. Abbie Gayner hit a double and a home run and had two RBIs. Jeanne Hujer also had two RBIs and scored a run. Kelley and Ava Ash each scored one run.

Norton 15-24, Woodridge 0-3

The Panthers (5-2, 2-0) swept a Metro Athletic Conference double-header against the Bulldogs (1-5, 0-4) with Bailey Acord hitting two home runs in each game. Acord has seven home runs this season. She finished the day with seven hits, 11 runs batted in and six runs scored.

Lake 9, Louisville 7

Despite giving up four home runs to the visiting Leopards, Lake came back with a six-run fifth inning to earn a non-league win. Ava Roberts earned the win for the Blue Streaks in three innings of relief.

Green 13, Field 2

Kylie Gorsuch hit two home runs, Marissa Redford contributed two singles and one home run and Mallory Gearhart totaled two singles and one double to lead the Bulldogs.

Walsh Jesuit 10, Independence 4

Sienna Tepley finished with four hits and four runs and McKayla McGee had three hits and three runs batted in to lead WJ (4-1).
