Ellendale boys' hoops beat Barnes County North 61-46

Mar. 4—JAMESTOWN — The Ellendale Cardinals took advantage of trips to the line to get a 61-46 win over Barnes County North in the first round of the Region 1 tournament on Monday, March 4, at the Jamestown Civic Center.

The Cardinals shot 19-for-26 from the free-throw line in the win. On the other side, the Bison shot 4-for-8 from the stripe.

"We were playing aggressive, instead of settling on the three-point line, we tried to go hard to the hole today and it obviously worked out," Cardinals head coach Brian Vance said.

The Cardinals got out to a quick 6-2 lead and kept that up pushing the lead out to 22-11 heading into the second quarter.

The Cardinals hit a bucket early in the second to push the lead out to 24-11 but the Bison would fight their way back into it going on a run to cut their deficit to 26-23. The Cardinals responded with a big run to push the lead out to 47-38 heading into the fourth.

"I told the guys the game is gonna be won in four-minute chunks and I've been telling them that the last few weeks now," Bison head coach Stacy Schaffer said. "We gotta win the four-minute battles and the end of the second quarter there we won that battle definitely so we got into that lead but we gave them the other four-minute battles and that was pretty much the game."

The Bison cut it to 49-42 before the Cardinals were able to pull away and get the 15-point win.

The Cardinals return to the floor at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, when they take on LaMoure/Litchville-Marion.
