Elaine Thompson-Herah changes coaches, joins Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce's group
Jamaicans Elaine Thompson-Herah and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who combined to win the last four Olympic 100m titles, appear set to train for the 2024 Paris Games under the same coach.
Thompson-Herah's management announced Monday that she will now be coached by Reynaldo Walcott, who began coaching Fraser-Pryce before the Tokyo Olympics.
Last Wednesday, Thompson-Herah's agency announced that she split from coach Shanikie Osbourne over pay.
Thompson-Herah and Fraser-Pryce previously shared a coach in Stephen Francis for several years until Fraser-Pryce switched to Walcott.
Thompson-Herah and Francis then split after the Tokyo Olympic season, after which she was coached by husband Derron and then Osbourne. who was labeled a "temporary" coach.
Last season, Thompson-Herah placed fifth in the 100m at the Jamaican Championships, missing the individual four-woman team for August's world championships.
The 31-year-old did not contest an individual race at an Olympics or worlds for the first time since 2013, though she did run in the preliminary heats of the 4x100m relay.
Thompson-Herah finished the season ranked fifth in the world in the 100m by best time, having clocked 10.79 at the Diamond League Final in Eugene, Oregon, on Sept. 16.
Fraser-Pryce, a 36-year-old who said in February that she plans to retire after the 2024 season, took 100m bronze at August's worlds after a limited build-up due to injury.
Fraser-Pryce won the Olympic 100m in 2008 and 2012. Thompson-Herah swept the Olympic 100m and 200m in 2016 and 2021.
Next year, either could become the first woman to win an Olympic 100m three times. Jamaica can become the first nation to win five consecutive Olympic women's 100m titles.
