Montwood's Ethan Becerra wins El Paso Times' Jarritos High School Athlete of the Week

Ethan Becerra of the Montwood HS boys basketball tam is this week's El Paso Times' Jarritos Athlete of the Week. Had a big tourney at Hays Christmas Tourney before the new year and scored 10 points, 12 points, 19 points, 23 points and 24 points.

Here are the top four vote getters in this week's poll:

  • Ethan Becerra, Montwood basketball, 33,691 votes, 42.58 percent.

  • Johan Camacho, Bowie basketball, 28,698 votes, 36.27 percent.

  • Nick Sapien, Pebble Hills basketball, 10,446 votes, 13.2 percent.

  • Julia Cuellar, Anthony basketball, 3,481 votes, 4.4 percent.

The El Paso Times will be honoring high school athletes this year on a weekly basis that you, the readers, help determine. We will be taking weekly nominations and will release a list of finalists for the Jarritos High School Athlete of the Week at 2 p.m. each Tuesday.

Students in all varsity sports are eligible to be nominated. The poll will close at 2 p.m. Thursday and the winners will be announced Friday each week.

Nominations are due by 5 p.m. Monday and can be submitted through email at fchavez@elpasotimes.com, by contacting Felix Chavez through text or on social media on X (formerly Twitter).

Here are this week's nominees:

  • Johan Camacho, Bowie basketball. Scored at least 20 points in two of the three games at Riverside Tourney and had a double-double in each game in terms of points and rebounds.

  • Hector Perez, Immanuel Christian basketball. Had solid Riverside Tournament, including 40 points and nine 3-pointers against Gadsden.

  • Jordyn Hernandez, Burges girls basketball. Helped the Mustangs to the Las Cruces Invite title. Scored 30 points and had 13 rebounds in title win vs. Las Cruces Mayfield. Passed 1,500 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career at the tourney.

  • Ethan Becerra, Montwood basketball. Had a big tourney at Hays Christmas Tourney. Scored 10 points, 12 points, 19 points, 23 points and 24 points last week.

  • Zoey Burton, Hanks girls basketball. Burton was named MVP of Hanks Tourney.

  • Nick Sapien, Pebble Hills boys basketball. Sapien was named MVP of Bryon Johnston Holiday Classic in Midland. He scored 17 points in title win vs. Midland Legacy.

  • Julia Cuellar, Anthony basketball. She scored 17, 25, 28 and 37 points in the Irvin Girls Tourney.

  • Devin Falk-Ramirez, Eastwood basketball. Falk-Ramirez was named to the All-Tournament team at the Caprock Tourney in Lubbock.
