El Paso crowned champion for most athlete streets in US

The Star on the Mountain as seen March 6, 2023.

Which city in America has the most streets named after athletes?

Hint: The "winning" city runs up the score by having entire neighborhoods of streets named after golfers lined up near the big thoroughfare Lee Trevino Drive.

That's right: El Paso took the title for most total streets named after athletes in one city.

ESPN set out to answer that question and any other question anyone could have about streets named after athletes, in a bit named The United States of Athlete Streets. Among other things, the sports network answered the pressing question about which city ranks No. 1 in that regard.

El Paso has 135 streets named after athletes, per ESPN's research. The interactive graphic also notes Don Haskins Drive and Andre Agassi Drive, but the big red cluster centers around Arnold Palmer Drive and Bert Yancey Circle.

Who took second? That's the metropolis of Owensboro, Kentucky (pop. 60,183), which has 65 — slightly less than half of what The City of Athlete Streets has.

Other takeaways: There are 3,764 streets in America named after athletes, and far and away, the most popular sport is horse racing. Secretariat leads with 263 streets named after him, then comes Dale Earnhardt with 101. The rest of the top 10 are racehorses (Citation, Whirlaway, Seabiscuit, Man O' War, Seattle Slew, Riva Ridge, Affirmed and War Admiral).

Texas has the most athlete streets, followed by California and Florida. Fourth is Kentucky, which makes sense considering that 1,835 of those 3,764 athlete streets are named after racehorses.
