Who is Dusty Baker? Manager bound for Cooperstown's Hall of Fame after retirement

Dusty Baker, who has managed the San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Washington Nationals and Houston Astros since 1993, announced his retirement as manager, after the Astros lost to the Texas Rangers in the 2023 American League Championship Series.

Baker, 74, won his first World Series championship as manager last year with Houston.

No active manager has more regular-season wins than Baker's 2,183. The six former managers with more regular-season wins than Baker are Connie Mack, Tony La Russa, John McGraw, Bobby Cox, Joe Torre and Sparky Anderson. All are National Baseball Hall of Famers.

Baker, too, is headed to Cooperstown as a manager.

The Reds shared a congratulatory message via social media.

Five things about Johnnie B. Baker's career in Major League Baseball:

Baker had 509 of his 2,183 regular-season managerial wins with the Cincinnati Reds, his second-highest total with any team he managed.

Baker's regular-season record as the Reds' manager from 2008 to 2013 was 509-463, a .524 winning percentage.

The rest of his regular-season managerial wins break down as follows: 840 with San Francisco from 1993 to 2002; 322 with Chicago from 2003 to 2006; 192 with Washington in 2016 and 2017; and 320 with Houston from 2020 to 2023.

Baker's postseason record with the Reds was 2-7. He was 11-13 in the playoffs with the Giants; 6-6 with the Cubs; and 4-6 with the Nats.

Baker's playoff record with the Astros after Monday's Game 7 loss? 34-19.

The last 10 teams Baker has managed have finished the season no worse than 3rd place in their division.

Nine of those 10 teams have played in the postseason.

The 2010 Reds that Baker managed finished in 1st place after finishing 4th the previous season.

The 2011 Reds were Baker's only non-playoff team of the past 10.

Baker's 2012 Cincinnati team lost the best-of-5 NLDS to the Giants after winning the first two games on the road.

Baker's 2013 Reds team lost the Wild Card game to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Both of Baker's Washington teams won the National League East.

The 2020 Astros lost the ALCS after the abbreviated regular season, and each of the past three Houston teams has won the American League West.

Baker won all three of his Manager of the Year awards with the same team.

Dusty was named National League Manager of the Year in 1993, his first season with the Giants.

He also won the award in 1997 and 2000, also with San Francisco.

As the Reds' skipper, Baker finished in second, one point behind the San Diego Padres' Bud Black, in the 2010 NL Manager of the Year vote.

He also finished second as the Reds' manager in the 2012 vote, behind Manager of the Year and former Reds skipper Davey Johnson of the Nats.

Baker won a World Series title as a player with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1981.

Drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 26th round of the 1967 MLB June Amateur Draft from Del Campo High School in Fair Oaks, California, Baker played in 19 MLB seasons for the Braves, Dodgers, Oakland A's and Giants.

He was a two-time All-Star for the Dodgers. He finished fourth in NL MVP voting in 1980 and won a Silver Slugger award.

Baker hit .278 in 8,022 career plate appearances, with 242 home runs and 1,013 RBIs.

Baker's son, Darren, spent last season with the Nationals' Triple-A team in Rochester.

Darren, 24, was in the Astros' dugout before games during this year's ALCS.

A 10th-round pick of the Nats in 2021, he hit .273 with 19 stolen bases in 99 games for the Red Wings.

Darren was 3 when he was pulled out of harm's way at home plate during the 2002 World Series by JT Snow as current Reds manager David Bell was about to score a run for the Giants.
