Downtown Kansas City packed with Big 12 Women’s basketball fans

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Downtown Kansas City was busy on Saturday, with four women’s basketball games on the schedule as well as Planet Comicon at the Kansas City Convention Center.

Jeannie and her family came to town from Oklahoma City. Her Oklahoma Sooners were about to tip off in the Big XII Women’s Championship Tournament.

“It’s a little chilly, but it’s beautiful,” Jeanie said. “Well, we’re going to take it all. Our girls are awesome!”

She wasn’t the only one who was confident, and not the only one who traveled to Kansas City for the games.

Arturo and Lina Jimenez came from Nebraska but are Texas Longhorns fans. They said it’s only a few hours to get to Kansas City from their house, which makes it easy to take a day trip to see the Longhorns.

“I don’t expect anything less but a win,” Arturo said before the game. “It takes about two and a half or three hours. Depends on who’s driving,” Linda said.

“Of course, only being 3 hours away, everyone’s here,” said one Iowa State fan from Des Moines. She wasn’t the only one who came from the Hawkeye State to see the Cyclones play, Daxon Kiesau and Abe Rojas, two exuberantly passionate fans, were thrilled by their comeback win.

“All of a sudden, we knew we had to get up on our feet, we had to start yelling,” said Kiesau. “Everything started clicking for the team. We fought through adversity, and we won!”

The tournament continues Sunday and Monday, and the championship game is scheduled for Tuesday at 8 p.m.
