Downs voted as Footballer of the Week

COLON — Colon quarterback Maverick Downs has been voted as the Footballer of the Week for his performance last week.

Downs led the Magi to the team's first win of the season, 58-48, over visiting Battle Creek St. Philip. Downs rushed the football 31 times for 317 yards and four touchdowns in the win. He also completed six of his 12 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Downs recorded seven tackles, including a pair for loss, in Colon's win.

There were five student-athletes up for the award last week. Downs recorded 49.24 percent of the total votes cast on sturgisjournal.com for the award. He beat Taylor Stewart of White Pigeon (126 yards rushing, two TDs) who finished with 34.8 percent of the votes cast.

Also up for consideration for the award were Marcellus' Dawsen Lehew (9.6 percent), Owen Gorham of Mendon (3.34 percent) and Seth Withington of Bronson (3.02 percent).

The poll for Footballer of the Week poll is put up each week on Sunday evening. Voting for the Footballer of the Week runs through Wednesdays at noon. Patrons can vote more than once for any given player, or multiple players.
