Wildcard doubles pair Madeleine Brooks and Holly Hutchinson booked their place in the quarter-finals of LTA’s Lexus Ilkley Trophy with victory over fellow Brit Eden Silva and her Kiwi partner Olivia Gadecki.

Brooks and Hutchinson won 7-5 6-0 in just under an hour in the home highlight of a rain-affected day of play.

In the women’s singles, Lily Yuriko Miyazaki lost 6-7(5) 6-4 6-1 to fifth seed Aliona Bolsova Zadoinov and did not have the chance to play for a doubles quarter-final spot alongside Lauryn John-Baptiste due to the inclement weather.

They joined young teenage duo Isabelle Lacy and Mingge Xu, plus Emily Webley-Smith in the singles, in being unable to take to the court on Tuesday but will all go again on Wednesday.

They will be joined by British players Sonay Kartal, who will be looking to continue the momentum from her impressive victory over Simona Waltert on Monday, and Anna Brogan, while 16-year-old Lacy will face Bolsova Zadoinov for a place in the quarter-finals.

In the men’s singles, Harry Wendelken was beaten 6-2 6-7(2) 6-2 by Japan’s Sho Shimabukuro, while Charles Broom must wait to face Raul Brancaccio.

The men’s draw saw an upset as top seed Nuno Borges exited in the last 32 at the hands of Thiago Augustin Tirante 4-6 6-3 6-4, but third seed Sebastian Ofner booked his quarter-final spot with a 6-4 1-6 6-4 win over Otto Virtanen.

There was also victory for fourth seed Jason Kubler, who fought past Alexander Ritschard 6-3 6-7(3) 6-3 while former world No.7 David Goffin beat sixth seed Dominic Stricker after the Swiss player was forced to retire.
