Dominick Cruz: ‘I’m still gunning for a championship’

Former two-division bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz headlines Saturday's UFC fight card in San Diego against No. 5 ranked Marlon Vera.

Cruz is riding a two-fight winning streak, but is closing in on 37-years old. Everyone only has a limited time in the sport, but the sand in Cruz' hourglass isn't bountiful. Facing Vera this weekend, Cruz feels like he's headed toward another championship bout.

"I do think I"m still gunning for a championship. Why would I do this if I weren't gunning for a championship? It would be pretty useless in my opinion," Cruz said during the UFC San Diego Media Day on Wednesday.

"I'm doing this for the possibilities. We don't know what's going to happen, but I'm in it and I choose it."

A win over Vera would put Cruz back in the Top 5 rankings. He'd be in that group of fighters in consideration to fight for the title.

"I do think that I'm on my way towards the title. Why wouldn't I be? I'm in the top eight, on my third title run, facing a guy that's about eight years younger than me that's really pissed off about something. I can't figure out what yet, but it should be interesting," Cruz said.
