Dominant Belarus biathlete is a former KGB agent

To the surprise of few, Belarus has not been a big presence at these Winter Olympics. It sent 33 competitors and, with only a few days left in these Games, has just three medals to its name.

Two have come thanks to a 31-year-old named Darya Domracheva, a biathlete with an exceptional knack for shooting. Aside from the fact that Domracheva trains that aspect of the sport for competition, she had also apparently been honing it as a KGB agent, a position she held until 2014.

“Domracheva had worked for the KGB until June 2014, but at the moment Darya is not an employee of the Committee,” KGB spokesperson Dmitry Pabyarzhin told Insidethegame.com in May of 2016. She had reportedly been a lieutenant for the KGB, information that had been accidentally posted on the website of Dynamo Sports Club, a sports and fitness society founded in 1923 in the Soviet Union.

Domracheva took silver in the women’s mass start biathlon on Feb. 17, and on the 22nd, she helped lead her team to a gold in the women’s relay.

This is her third Olympic Games, with her debut coming in Vancouver in 2010 with a bronze in the individual event. She followed that with three golds in Sochi. Her pair of medals in PyeongChang runs her total up to six in her Olympic career.
