Des Moines Public Schools ends contract of Roosevelt girls volleyball coach Mark Steinbach

Des Moines Public Schools decided not to renew the contract of longtime Roosevelt varsity volleyball coach Mark Steinbach, who had worked at the school since 2006 but faced complaints from student-athletes and parents.

Phil Roeder, a spokesperson for the district, said Steinbach's stipend would not be renewed for the upcoming school year.

"The school district (is) following our procedure to look into complaints made about an employee, but because this is a personnel matter, I am not at liberty to discuss the findings of that process," he said.

Reached on Twitter, Steinbach said he was out of town and could not comment until Friday.

Roosevelt's varsity volleyball team went 20-18 last season. According to the school’s volleyball website, Steinbach compiled a career record of 273-229. He also was 2011 Central Iowa Metropolitan League Metro Conference coach of the year.

Roeder said Roosevelt is focused right now on getting a new head coach and "supporting players as they get ready for the next season by continuing open gym sessions, camp opportunities, and playing opportunities being held at Grand View University."

The district's decision came after complaints from parents and players, some of which were also made to the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners.
