District tennis roundup: New Smyrna Beach, Seabreeze claim league championships

Two local champions emerged from the District 5-3A tennis tournament Friday.

At Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Seabreeze captured first place in the boys standings and New Smyrna Beach secured the top spot on the girls side. The Sandcrabs were the girls runners-up.

All three of those rosters earned trips to the regional playoffs. The semifinals are Tuesday.

The Seabreeze boys will host Edgewater at 3 p.m.

Also at 3 p.m., the New Smyrna Beach girls will welcome Edgewater to town, and the Sandcrab girls will traverse to Sebring.

Their appearances in the regional postseason give the Volusia-Flagler area four girls teams and three boys teams that are moving on. Spruce Creek's girls and Flagler Palm Coast's boys also punched their tickets Tuesday.

District 3-3A

Matanzas’ boys program is headed to the regional playoffs after placing second during its district tournament Wednesday at Ponte Vedra High School. The Sharks claimed the crown.

Tuesday, the Pirates will visit the Jonesville Tennis Center for a 3 p.m. meeting with Gainesville in the Region 2-3A semifinals.

In the girls standings, Matanzas slotted fifth behind winner Ponte Vedra.

District 4-1A

Father Lopez advanced to the finals in four of the five singles positions and finished as the girls runner-up to P.K. Yonge last Tuesday at the Jonesville Tennis Center.

The Green Wave will travel to the Episcopal School of Jacksonville for the Region 2-1A semifinals at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Sophomore Ofelia Stout booked a trip to the state tournament. She won the No. 1 singles finals over P.K. Yonge in three sets.

P.K. Yonge also topped the boys standings, with Oak Hall as the runner-up.
