District baseball: Winter Haven plays waiting game after loss, plus all semifinals results

WINTER HAVEN — The Winter Haven baseball team is playing a game it didn’t want to be playing.

With a 6-1 loss in the Class 7A, District 6 semifinals to Newsome on Tuesday, Winter Haven will now have to endure the waiting game to see if it makes the regional playoffs.

A win would’ve cemented the Blue Devils as at least the No. 6 seed. Now, the Blue Devils (17-9) have to see how the other districts play out and hope they earn one of the eight spots in the regional playoffs.

“It’ll be close, but probably not,” Winter Haven head coach David Schafer said in regard to this maybe being his team’s final game of the season. “I think we’re far enough ahead of the people behind us.”

Winter Haven came in at No. 6 and Newsome was No. 7. The teams are sure to flip flop before Newsome plays for the district title on Thursday at top seed Durant.

A mix of stellar pitching from Newsome ace Wade Walton, a High Point University commit, and sloppy defense made all the difference on Tuesday.

Walton struck out 12 in six innings of work, while only surrendering two hits.

“Their pitcher was really good tonight,” Schafer said. “He did a very good job. We knew they were a good team coming into this game.”

Meanwhile the Blue Devils didn’t help their cause with three errors and a bases-loaded walk.

Winter Haven scored its lone run on a RBI single from Joshua Cruz, but the damage had already been done.

“If we hold onto the ball that’s one run, or if we don’t walk the lead-off guy, or if we don’t make the error(s), all of a sudden, we’re in a 2-1 or 3-1 game with a runner in scoring position and the game on the line in the last inning.”
