District 4-5A tennis: Wylie mixed doubles duos earn spots at regional tournament

The Wylie mixed doubles duo of Hope Willis and Trevor Short won the District 4-5A tennis title and will next compete at the Region I-5A tournament next week.

Willis and Short, the top-seeded team in the bracket, teamed up to lose a total of six games on the way to a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the final against Wylie teammates Brandon Cowling and Kate Delgado, 6-1, 6-2. Cowling and Delgado also earned spots at the regional meet.

The other finals were dominated by squads from Lubbock.

Lubbock High’s Kalina Trindale won girls singles and the Westerners Parth Mittal took boys singles, defeating Abilene High’s Noah Morris, 6-4, 6-2 in the final. Morris also earned a spot in the regional tournament.

In girls doubles, the duo of Abby Bryan and Allie Dunn earned a spot in the regional tournament after falling the final.

In girls singles, Abilene High’s Taylor Nevitt lost a regional playback to Lubbock High’s Khloe Valdez.

Lubbock Cooper duos also won boys and girls doubles.

The Region I-5A tournament is scheduled for May 8-9 at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock.
