Dickinson Trinity triumph in Coal Country Tournament, secures Gold Division victory

Aug. 28—HAZEN, N.D. — Yes, it was a non-conference preseason tournament that doesn't impact the standings, but the Coal Country Tournament in Hazen on Saturday was a great way for Class A teams to see some talented squads from across the state.

Dickinson Trinity won the Gold Division Championship at the tournament, 2 games to zero over Minot Our Redeemers.

To open pool play, the Titans took first and sent them to the Gold Division as the top seed. The Titans split with Kenmare/Bowbells, 1-1, on scores of 20-25 and followed that up with a 25-13 comeback. They then won over New England, 25-13 and 25-3 in straight-sets to move on to the divisional play.

They topped Shiloh Christian, 2 games to zero — 25-19 and 25-13 — and Beulah fell to a 2-0 defeat — 25-14 and 25-11 — before the Gold Division semifinals in the late afternoon. Next up were the Bishop Ryan Lions, who the Titan football team visited and defeated on Friday night, 47-0, were up next for the volleyballers, and they handily defeated them 25-19 and 25-16 in the semifinals.

The championship game was more of the same, as they crushed Our Redeemer 25-15 and 25-20 to get the season off to a good start. They next host Richardton-Taylor's Raiders on Tuesday, Aug. 29 at 6:30 p.m.
