Detroit Tigers play first home game of the year

DETROIT (WOOD) — To the cheers of thousands of fans, the Detroit Tigers took on the Oakland A’s for their home opener Friday.

More than 40,000 people were expected to be in downtown Detroit for the game.

“The whole town is buzzing, everyone’s just happy to have baseball back, in a good mood, walking around, cheerful,” Michael Cummings from Portage said.

Tigers beat Athletics in home opener

For some, it’s about reuniting with friends as much as it is about the first home game.

“I feel like we don’t get together as much as we would like to being on the west side and they’re all on the east side, so it’s good to get over here,” Anna Wise from grand Rapids said.

For Michael Cumming from Portage, it was a way to support the Tigers and see what new things they have in store this season.

“Every year it seems like there’s something new…  this year the new stadium, so it’s always great to see them work to make it better,” Cummings said.

The home opener was the first chance that fans were able to experience the new videoboard that was installed during the offseason. The new videoboard is 15,688 square feet — the second largest in Major League Baseball.

Comerica Park also has an upgraded audio system and new televisions throughout the facility, as well as a new sensory room.

With a win over the A’s at home Friday, the Tigers are now 6-1, which gives fans hope for this season.

“The last couple of years have been really brutal to watch so to see them be so successful to start off and get them winning their first game here, it’s exciting,” Matt Wise, a fan from Grand Rapids, said.
