Game notes: The second game of the Tigers' series with the Angles will see the second start of the young career of Sawyer Gipson-Long.

The righty made his MLB debut last week and impressed, striking out five batters and issuing zero walks through five innings. The four hits he allowed led to two earned runs and he ultimately picked up the win in his first career start.

The 25-year-old's calling card is to control the strike zone, a favorite talking point of Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris. Gipson-Long lasted just five-plus innings in his debut, but didn't issue a walk. While it's obviously not sustainable to never walk a batter, if he can continue to throw the ball in the zone he could be a staple of the Tigers' rotation.

Meanwhile, the Tigers will face lefty Tyler Anderson, who is having a fairly mediocre season and has struggled with control. His 59 walks this year are already tied for a career high (2018), but in 40 fewer innings pitched (136). Last year, he threw a career-high 178⅔ innings and only allowed 34 walks, with very similar numbers in 2021.

He did not, however, struggle at all in his last time out. On Sept. 9 against the Cleveland Guardians, Anderson went eight innings and allowed just four hits, two earned runs, and one walk.
