DON'T STOP BELIEVING: 'Believability' is Detroit Red Wings' word of the second half. Here's why

Game notes: Do the Detroit Red Wings still remember how to play road games? Or even what they are? The Wings' first dip back into the road waters in nearly a month should provide quite the test.

The Wings have had a truly bizarre schedule to start the New Year. The last time the Red Wings played a road game was Jan. 19 against the Carolina Hurricanes. After the trip to Carolina, the Wings had a five-game home stand before a nine-day break for the All-Star game, followed up by another home game Saturday against the Vancouver Canucks. After a crazy comeback tapped off by a patented (well, at least in the NHL) "Griddy" dance from defenseman Jake Walman celebrating his shootout goal, the Wings finally got back on the team plane and won't play in Little Caesars Arena again until Feb. 22.

The first of the Wings' three games in Western Canada will be against the NHL's preeminent player who just happens to play for the league's hottest team, the Edmonton Oilers. Despite losing two out of their last three games, the Oilers have an incredible 21-5 record since Dec. 1, which is the best in the league over that span and slightly ahead of the Vancouver Canucks, who the Wings play next.

Despite their fantastic play since December, the Oilers still sit 15 points behind the Canucks, which (do the math) tells you just how poor the Oilers were in October and November.

If you tighten the sample size down to just the month of January, surprise, surprise, the Oilers are still first and the Canucks are second. But you know who's third? That's right, it's your Detroit Red Wings. Yes, the Wings are right up there as one of the hottest teams in the league since the turn of the calendar.

With both teams getting optimal rest after games on Saturday, tonight's game is shaping up to be a barn burner.

After the game Tuesday, the Wings will make their way over to the Pacific Coast to face the Canucks (Thursday) before heading back east to face the Calgary Flames (Feb. 17) and then finally back west again to play the Seattle Kraken (Feb. 19).
