Detroit Pistons send Bojan Bogdanovic, Alec Burks to Knicks for 4 players, 2 draft picks

Troy Weaver keeps on dealing, sending his two most attractive trade assets to the Big Apple.

The Detroit Pistons' general manager and his front office executed yet another move ahead of Thursday's NBA trade deadline, trading Bojan Bogdanovic and Alec Burks to the New York Knicks in exchange for guards Ryan Arcidiacono, Malachi Flynn, Quentin Grimes, forward Evan Fournier and two second-round draft picks, the Free Press has confirmed.

Grimes, 23, is the centerpiece of the deal for the Pistons. The 25th overall pick in the 2021 draft is a 3-and-D wing who has knocked down 37.9% of his 3-point attempts in his career, though he's slumped to 36.3% this season. According to Cleaning the Glass, opposing teams scored 2.7 fewer points per 100 possessions when Grimes was on the floor.

Standing 6 feet 5, Grimes has wing size and should upgrade Detroit's perimeter defense. He's the third 3-and-D wing/forward the team has added via trade this week. Grimes will enter restricted free agency in 2025, giving the Pistons more than a full season to evaluate his fit and upside.

In Wednesday night's win over the Kings in Sacramento, Burks scored 25 points off the bench. Bogdanovic did not play with a sore left calf.

Bogdanovic, 34, arrived in Detroit from the Utah Jazz shortly before the start of the 2022-23 season. The sharpshooter, who is averaging 20.2 points per game and hitting 41.5% of his 3-pointers this season, has one year remaining on his contract for $19 million. Only two million is guaranteed, however, essentially making his contract an expiring deal.

Burks, 32, arrived in Detroit during the 2022 offseason and has been one of the better off-the-bench scorers in the league. He's averaging 12.2 points and making 39.2% of his 3-pointers. But his overall efficiency is down, as he's shooting 38.8% overall after making 43.6% of them last season. He's on an expiring contract worth $10.5 million, making him an attractive trade target.

On Wednesday, the Pistons made the first move of deadline week by acquiring forward Simone Fontecchio from the Utah Jazz. They then traded Monte Morris to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Troy Brown Jr., Shake Milton and a 2030 second-round pick.

Then on Thursday morning, they added 76ers guard Danuel House and a 2024 second-round pick (which originally belonged to the Knicks) in exchange for a highly protected 2028 second-round pick. House was later waived.

In the afternoon, The Athletic's Shams Charania reported the Pistons waived forward Joe Harris, whom Detroit acquired via trade in the offseason. Harris, 32, had only played in 16 games this season due to injury and a logjam on the roster. The career 43.6% 3-point shooter is making on 33.3% of those shots this season, averaging just 2.4 points per game. The Pistons also waived former No. 7 overall pick Killian Hayes.

The Pistons (7-43) take on the Trail Blazers on Thursday night in Portland.

Among the players acquired from the Knicks, Fournier, 31, is the most accomplished, though the 6-foot-6 Frenchman played in only three games this season for New York. He has averaged 13.9 points per game in his career and shot 37.8% from the 3-point line. He has a $19 million team option on his contract for next season.

Flynn, 25, was the 29th pick in the 2020 draft, and just got to New York via Toronto as a part of the OG Anunoby trade in late December. The point guard has played in 45 games this season, 14 with the Knicks, and averages 4.2 points and 1.8 assists, shooting 40.6% from the field and 34.4% from 3.

Arcidiacono, 29, is another point guard who has played in only 50 NBA games in the last 2½ seasons. Both Flynn and Arcidiacono will enter restricted free agency this offseason.
