A detailed week-by-week breakdown of Eagles' 2023 schedule

A week-by-week breakdown of Eagles' 2023 schedule originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

The Chiefs were 14-3 last year and won the Super Bowl. The Bills were 13-3. The 49ers 13-4. The Cowboys 12-5.

And in the span of 28 days, the Eagles face them all. Back to back to back to back.

If you factor in the Cowboys two weeks before the Chiefs and then a bye, that’s five straight games against teams that won at least 12 games last year. Add in the Seahawks the week after the second Cowboys game and that’s six straight games against 2022 playoff teams.

The Eagles’ 2023 schedule is out and it’s a doozy.

Five prime-time games, only three 1 p.m. games, Christmas and New Year’s games and for the 17th year in a row, at least one national TV prime-time game against the Cowboys.

Let’s take a look:

Sunday, Sept. 10

Eagles at Patriots, 4:25 p.m., Gillette Stadium

The Eagles have won in Foxboro only twice – an overtime win at the old Sullivan Stadium in 1987 behind Randall Cunningham and a win as eight-point underdogs at Gillette late in 2015 three weeks before Chip Kelly got fired. That was the Eagles’ last game in Foxboro. Their last win over the Patriots came in Super Bowl LII at U.S. Bank Stadium, with Nick Foles topping Tom Brady. The last meeting was at the Linc in 2019, the Patriots winning 17-10 on Julian Edelman’s game-winning TD pass to Phillip Dorsett. The Eagles are 8-7 overall against the Patriots but 2-5 since 2000. They’re 2-4 in New England and 2-5 vs. Bill Belichick (3-6 vs. Belichick including his time with the Browns). This is the first time the Eagles will open a season against the Patriots, although they did open the 1944 season against the Boston Yanks at Fenway Park. The Eagles won 28-7.

Thursday, Sept. 14

Vikings at Eagles, 8:15 p.m., Lincoln Financial Field

The Vikings play in Philly for the second year in a row after losing 24-7 to the Eagles in Week 2 last year behind 333 passing yards and 57 rushing yards from Jalen Hurts. The Eagles are 15-15 all-time vs. the Vikings, 11-7 at home and 5-2 at the Linc. From 1962 through 1978, the Eagles were 0-8 vs. the Vikings. Since then, they’re 15-7 and 11-3 in Philadelphia. Since the late 1970s, the only Vikings QBs to win a game in Philadelphia are Wade Wilson in 1985, Joe Webb in 2010 and Kirk Cousins in 2018. The Vikings are coming off a 13-4 regular season, but they lost a home wild-card game to the Giants as three-point favorites.

Monday, Sept. 25

Eagles at Buccaneers, 7:15 p.m., Raymond James Stadium

The Bucs have been responsible for some of the lowest moments in Eagles history. The Buccaneers – along with the Cowboys and Saints – have beaten the Eagles three times in the postseason, including the awful 27-10 2002 NFC Championship Game and a wild-card game in Tampa in 2021. The Bucs have won four straight over the Eagles since an Eagles win in Tampa in 2013 with Nick Foles throwing two TD passes to DeSean Jackson and one to Riley Cooper and LeSean McCoy piling up 171 scrimmage yards. The Eagles are 10-11 overall against Tampa, 4-5 in Tampa and 3-3 at Raymond James, although they’re just 3-7 vs. the Bucs over the last 20 years. This is the second in a row of five total prime-time games for the Eagles this year.

Sunday, Oct. 1

Commanders at Eagles, 1  p.m., Lincoln Financial Field

The Eagles are just 4-4 in their last eight home games against Washington, including an 11-point loss last year as 10 ½-point favorites – the first time they’ve lost by double digits as a double-digit favorite since the Joe Webb game vs. the Vikings in 2010. Overall, the Eagles are 42-44-3 at home vs. the Washington Football Team and 11-9 at the Linc. The series began in 1934 and the Eagles were 0-8-2 in their first 10 home games against the WFT franchise before finally beating them 16-0 in 1945. The last Washington QB to beat the Eagles in Philadelphia more than twice was Joe Theismann. The Washington franchise has an all-time winning record vs. the Eagles at 89-83-6, although the Eagles have a winning record at 81-74-5 since 1943 and they’re 8-3 in the last 11 matchups. From 1963 through 1992, the Eagles won just 18 of 61 games against Washington. The last Washington quarterback to beat the Eagles twice in a season is Kirk Cousins in 2015. In the last 10 Eagles-Washington meetings, Washington has started nine quarterbacks. The Commanders haven’t won a playoff game since 2005.

Sunday, Oct. 8

Eagles at Rams, 4:05 p.m., SoFi Stadium

The Eagles return to L.A. for the first time since 2018 and will play in SoFi Stadium for the first time. The Eagles haven’t lost to the Rams in Los Angeles since the franchise moved back after the 2015 season. They won in 2017 and 2018 at the L.A. Coliseum. Their last loss on the road to the Rams came late in the 2004 season at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis in a meaningless game after the Eagles had clinched No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs. Their last meaningful road loss to the Rams was the 2001 NFC Championship Game, also in St. Louis. In all, the Eagles have won four straight road games against the Rams and they’re 6-1 in their last seven meetings, with the lone loss coming at the Linc early in 2020, Doug Pederson’s final season. In all, against a franchise that’s been based in Cleveland, L.A., St. Louis and L.A. again, the Eagles are 22-20-1 and 7-11-1 on the road. The Eagles were 9-15-1 vs. the Rams from 1937 through 1985 but 13-5 since. The Rams won just five games last year after winning the Super Bowl a year earlier.

Sunday, Oct. 15

Eagles at Jets, 4:25 p.m., MetLife Stadium

The Eagles put their perfect record against the Jets up against Aaron Rodgers, now in his first year with the Jets after 18 seasons with the Packers. The Eagles are 12-0 all-time vs. the Jets, 6-0 on the road and 2-0 at MetLife Stadium. The Jets and Texans are the only teams the Eagles have never lost to, but they’ve only faced the Texans six times. And their 12-0 record vs. the Jets is the best record by any NFL team vs. another team. The last meeting was at MetLife in 2019 and the Eagles won 33-18 behind Gardner Minshew. The closest of the 12 games was the Eagles’ 21-10 win late in the 1996 season. Facing former coach Rick Kotite, the Eagles trailed 20-7 early in the fourth quarter before rallying for the win on Ty Detmer TD passes to Chris T. Jones and Irving Fryar. The Eagles are 3-5 vs. Rodgers, including a 40-33 win last year at the Linc. The Jets haven’t had a winning season since 2015.

Sunday, Oct. 22

Dolphins at Eagles, 8:20 p.m., Lincoln Financial Field

The Eagles haven’t had a ton of success against the Dolphins, who are 9-6 all-time vs. the Eagles, including wins in the last two meetings – 2015 at the Linc and 2019 in Miami The Eagles last win was 26-10 in Miami in 2011 and the last win in Philly was in 2007 with A.J. Feeley topping John Beck. Brian Westbrook rushed for 148 yards in that game. This will be only the third Eagles-Dolphins game at the Linc. The Eagles were 2-2 vs. the Dolphins at the Vet and 1-0 at Franklin Field. Dan Marino was 3-0 vs. the Eagles and is the only Miami QB who beat the Eagles more than once. The Dolphins reached the playoffs last year for the first time since 2016 but they still haven’t won a playoff game since 2000.

Sunday, Oct. 29

Eagles at Commanders, 1 p.m., FedEx Field

The Eagles lost their first three games at FedEx Field in the late 1990s, but since then they are 16-7 in Landover, including a 5-1 record in their last six games. They’ve already won more games at FedEx than they won in 36 years at RFK Stadium, where they were 12-21-3 from 1961 through 1996. The Eagles won easily last year at FedEx, scoring 24 second-quarter points on Jalen Hurts TD passes to Dallas Goedert, A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. Of the 10 years they’ve lost at FedEx, the Eagles have only reached the playoffs once (in 2008). In Week 8, this is the Eagles’ second of three 1 p.m. kickoffs.

Sunday, Nov. 5

Cowboys at Eagles, 4:25 p.m., Lincoln Financial Field

The Eagles got a win over Cooper Rush and the Cowboys at the Linc last year, but they’ve won only seven of the last 18 meetings with Dallas at the Linc, and they’ve only beaten Dak Prescott once in Philadelphia, allowing seven touchdowns without recording an interception in four games plus one series in a fifth. Prescott’s 101.7 passer rating is highest ever at the Linc, just ahead of Tom Brady’s 100.6. Overall, the Eagles are 31-31 at home against the Cowboys going back to 1960 and 9-11 at the Linc. All-time, the Eagles are 55-73 vs. the Cowboys and 8-14 in 22 meetings since 2012. The Eagles haven’t won three straight games against the Cowboys since 2003 and 2004. The Cowboys finished 12-5 last year and were the No. 5 seed in the NFC playoffs, beating the Bucs and losing to the 49ers.

Sunday, Nov. 12

Bye Week

Monday, Nov. 20

Eagles at Chiefs, 8:15 p.m., Arrowhead Stadium

A national TV audience will watch as the Eagles look to avenge their 38-35 loss to the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII three months ago in Glendale, Ariz. The Eagles were 4-2 vs. the Chiefs before Andy Reid became their head coach and 4-0 since. Reid was 3-0 vs. the Chiefs with the Eagles, so Reid has been the winning coach in the last seven Eagles-Chiefs games. The Eagles’ last game in K.C. was a Week 2 loss in 2017, their last loss until December. Their last win over the Chiefs was a 34-14 game at the Linc in 2009, with Kevin Kolb throwing for 327 yards and TDs to DeSean Jackson and Brent Celek. The Eagles’ last win in Kansas City was 37-31 early in 2005, with Donovan McNabb throwing for 369 yards and TDs to Terrell Owens, Mike Bartrum and L.J. Smith. The Eagles are 4-6 all-time vs. the Chiefs and 3-2 in Kansas City. The teams have met twice in prime-time, both on Thursday nights – a 23-10 Eagles win at Arrowhead in 2001 and a 26-16 Chiefs win at the Linc in 2013.

Sunday, Nov. 26

Bills at Eagles, 4:25 p.m., Lincoln Financial Field

Lansdale native and La Salle High graduate Sean McDermott returns to Philadelphia for the first time as a head coach to face an Eagles franchise where he spent the 1999 through 2010 seasons on Andy Reid’s coaching staff, the last two as defensive coordinator. The Bills, 47-18 over the last four seasons, haven’t faced the Eagles in Philadelphia since 2015, a 23-20 Eagles win. The Eagles beat Josh Allen and the Bills 31-13 in Buffalo in 2019, and they’re 8-6 all-time vs. the Bills in a series dating back to 1973. The Eagles are 4-2 all-time vs. the Bills in Philly but 2-0 at the Linc. The Bills’ last win in Philadelphia was at the Vet in 1996 behind Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas and Andre Reed. Ty Detmer threw for 315 yards for the Eagles in that game.

Sunday, Dec. 3

49ers at Eagles, 4:25 p.m., Lincoln Financial Field

The highly anticipated rematch of the 2022 NFC Championship Game, which the Eagles won 31-7 after knocking all the 49ers’ quarterbacks out of the game. The Eagles rushed for four touchdowns and held the Niners to 164 net yards. The 49ers are 20-15-1 overall vs. the Eagles and 11-6-1 in Philadelphia, although the Eagles are 4-3 at the Linc. From the onset of the series in 1952 through 1992, the Eagles won just six of 23 games against the 49ers. Since then they’re 9-4.  The 49ers won the last regular-season game at the Linc, 17-11, in Nick Sirianni’s second game (and first loss) as an NFL head coach. The Eagles won only two of the first 12 meetings in Philadelphia but are 4-2 since. The game will mark the return of Pro Bowl defensive tackle Javon Hargrave to Philadelphia. Safe bet the 49ers will have at least eight QBs active.

Sunday, Dec. 10

Eagles at Cowboys, 8:20 p.m., AT&T Stadium

The Eagles try to end a five-game losing streak in North Texas, where they haven’t won since the 2017 Super Bowl season, when Carson Wentz threw TD passes to Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith, Ronald Darby, Malcolm Jenkins and Rodney McLeod picked off Prescott and Derek Barnett had two sacks in a 37-9 win (after trailing 9-7 at halftime). That’s the only time the Eagles have ever beaten Prescott in Dallas. Since then, the Cowboys have outscored the Eagles by an average of 37-21 in five wins at AT&T Stadium. The Eagles’ longest losing streak ever in Dallas was 13 straight from 1966 through 1978. The current streak is their longest since a six-game losing streak from 1992 through 1996 that included two postseason losses. This will be the 17th straight year at least one Eagles-Cowboys game has been on prime-time. Going back to 1993, the Eagles are 9-17 in their last 26 prime-time games vs. the Cowboys.

Sunday, Dec. 17

Eagles at Seahawks, 4:25 p.m., CenturyLink Field

The Eagles have lost seven straight games against the Seahawks, their longest current losing streak against any NFL team. The Buccaneers and Chiefs are both tied for second with four-game losing streaks. The Eagles’ last win over Seattle – and their only win in the last 20 years – was 26-7 in November 2008 at Qwest Field on Donovan McNabb TD passes to Reggie Brown and Todd Herremans. Overall, the Eagles are 7-12 vs. the Seahawks but 1-9 since 2005. They’re 5-5 in Seattle with three straight losses. The Eagles have scored 17 or fewer points in each of their seven consecutive losses to the Seahawks. The most recent meeting was Seattle’s 23-17 win in 2020 at the Linc despite Carson Wentz TD passes to Dallas Goedert and Richard Rodgers.

Monday, Dec. 25

Giants at Eagles, 4:30 p.m., Lincoln Financial Field

This will be only the Eagles’ third game on Christmas Day. In 2006, they beat the Cowboys at Texas Stadium behind Jeff Garcia, and in 2017 they beat the Raiders at the Linc with Nick Foles at quarterback to lock up No. 1 seed in the postseason. The Eagles have won 10 straight home games against the Giants, allowing an average of 14 points in those 10 games. Their last home loss to the Giants came in 2013, when Matt Barkley was forced to play most of the game after Michael Vick got hurt. The last time they lost to the Giants at home when their starting quarterback didn’t get hurt was in 2008. Overall, the Eagles are 52-38-1 vs. the Giants at home and 16-6 at the Linc.

Sunday, Dec. 31

Cards at Eagles, 1 p.m., Lincoln Financial Field

Jonathan Gannon returns to Philly in his first year as head coach of a Cards team that hasn’t won a playoff game since 2015. The Eagles are 29-28-3 all-time at home against a Cards franchise that’s been based in Chicago, St. Louis and Arizona and they’re only 5-5 in their last 10 home meetings against the Cards. This will be the first meeting in Philly since the Eagles clobbered Arizona 34-7 during their nine-game winning streak in 2017. Carson Wentz threw four touchdown passes that day – to Nelson Agholor, Zach Ertz, Trey Burton and Torrey Smith. The two teams met last year in Glendale, with the Eagles winning 20-17 during their season-opening eight-game winning streak. The Cards own a 60-57-6 all-time record vs. the Eagles

Week 18

Eagles at Giants, TBA, MetLife Stadium

The Eagles travel to the friendly confines of MetLife Stadium, where they’re 9-4 against the Giants and 11-4 overall, including two wins against the Jets. The Eagles are 12-5 in their last 17 games against the Giants in East Rutherford and 31-21-1 against the Giants on the road since 1970. The last Giants QB with a winning record vs. the Eagles in East Rutherford was Kerry Collins, who was 3-2 from 2000 through 2003. Since the onset of the series in 1933, the Eagles are 93-88-2 vs. the Giants but 64-41-1 since 1970. They’ve won four straight vs. the Giants and they’re 24-6 in the last 30 meetings going back to 2008. The Giants have gone 15 straight years without sweeping the Eagles.
