Denver Post columnist: Colorado administration differs with fans’ conference realignment hopes

It has been almost one month since USC and UCLA’s Pac-12 departure forced Colorado to begin reconsidering its conference affiliation. The Pac-12 is dying (or is it?) and the Big 12 is the preferred landing spot for most Buffs fans. However, the CU administration doesn’t appear as keen on leaving its West Coast friends.

Denver Post columnist Sean Keeler is rarely afraid to voice his opinion and he pointed out this dilemma in a recent conversation with SicEm365 radio. Here’s what Keeler said (courtesy of Heartland College Sports):

“I would say the fan base would be 60-40 Big 12, and maybe even higher. They were burned. They feel duped by the Pac-12.”

Keeler went on to add, “Here’s the kicker, I think the administration is 70-30 Pac-12. They want the money, they want the comfort, they want the politics, they want the caviar, they want the prestige, air quotes. The administration at CU views the Big 12 as a JUCO league. They don’t want to be in that. And the fans absolutely do.”

That’s a problem. If CU does stay in the Pac-12, some damage to the fan base could follow.

Keeler also pointed out that many of Colorado’s best donors live in California, which lends some reason to why the administration prefers staying in the Pac-12.
