Dates, times for playoffs are official

Nov. 5—The road to a potential big-time rematch begins this weekend.

Dates and times for the first round of the West Virginia prep football playoffs were made official Sunday.

Class A No. 1 James Monroe and No. 4 Greenbrier West are set up to meet in the semifinals, with a trip to Wheeling Island Stadium on the line. But they both have to make it that far first.

Greenbrier West (10-0), which completed the ninth undefeated regular season in school history last weekend, will be the only local team playing at home Friday night. The Cavaliers will host No. 13 Wirt County at 7:30 p.m.

It will be the team's first playoff game on its new artificial surface.

James Monroe (8-1) will have to wait until Saturday night to begin what it hopes will be a run to a return trip to Wheeling. The Mavericks will host No. 16 Sherman at 7:30 p.m.

James Monroe fell to Williamstown in the 2022 Class A state title game.

If the Cavaliers and Mavericks each win their first and second round games, they will play in the semifinals in Lindside the weekend of Nov. 24-25.

Greenbrier West defeated James Monroe 25-8 Oct. 6 in Charmco.

One rematch that will definitely be played involves Oak Hill and Princeton. The two will meet in the Class AAA playoffs Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

No. 5 Princeton (9-1) will host the No. 12 Red Devils (8-2) at Hunnicutt Stadium. The Tigers defeated Oak Hill 42-28 Sept. 8 in Princeton.

In Class AA, No. 14 Independence (6-3) will begin its quest to defend its first state championship on the road Friday night when it travels to No. 3 Roane County (9-1). Kickoff will be 7:30 p.m.

It will be the Patriots' first road playoff game — not counting its back-to-back appearances in the state championships in Wheeling — since a quarterfinal loss at Fairmont in 2020.

Class A No. 12 Summers County (6-4) is making its first playoff trip under head coach Josh Evans. The Bobcats will make the trip to Mason County to take on No. 5 Wahame (10-0) Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

Also in Class A, No. 15 Midland Trail (5-5) returns to the playoffs after a one-year absence. The Patriots will travel to No. 2 Tucker County (10-0) Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Super Six weekend is set for Dec. 1-2.
