Dan Tobin wins South Bend Senior Metro in sudden-death playoff with Martin Nash

SOUTH BEND — Dan Tobin beat Martin Nash on the second playoff hole at Erskine Park Sunday to win the overall title in the Greater South Bend Senior Men’s Metro Golf Championships.

Tobin and Nash finished regulation Sunday tied at 1-over 143, necessitating the playoff.

Tobin led after Saturday’s opening round with a 1-under round of 71 at Elbel Park. Tobin offset bogeys at Nos. 1 and 2 with birdies at holes 6, 14 and 15. Nash, meanwhile, opened with a 75 that included birdies at Nos. 8, 11, 15 and 16, bogeys at Nos. 1, 3, 6, 9 and 14 and a double bogey at the 10th hole.

Nash, however, came back on Sunday at Erskine. His 2-under 68 included birdies at Nos. 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 17 and bogeys at Nos. 2, 11, 13 and 16. Tobin, meanwhile, had three birdies (Nos. 5, 16 and 17) and five bogeys (Nos. 4, 10, 11, 13 and 14) in his round of 2-over 72.

Tobin and Nash competed in the 50-59 division. Finishing third in the flight was Bruce Berta, who had rounds of 79 at Elbel and 77 at Erskine for a 156 total.

Kevin Kowalski won the 60-69 age division flight with a 148 total which included an opening round of even-par 72 at Elbel followed by a 6-over 76 round Sunday at Erskine. Kowalski beat Jim Shaw and Kevin Swartz by six shots in the flight.

The 70-over flight was won by Richard Neher with a 155 total after rounds of 79 and 76. David Krizman finished second three shots back.
