CANYON — From the moment Gaylon Selman announced his retirement as head football coach of the Randall Raiders, the question has swirled across the Panhandle:

"Who is getting the Randall job?"

Twitter, texts and the community was abuzz trying to determine who would take over the reigns of the Raiders football program. Rumors circulated, word traveled and it was widely believed the answer was known since last week.

On Monday at Happy State Bank Stadium, however, the answer to, "Who is getting the Randal job?" was officially revealed.

Dan Sherwood, who has spent the past nine years as the head football coach of Caprock High School, was approved by the Canyon ISD School Board as the new head football coach for the Randall Raiders at Happy State Bank Stadium.

Sherwood is an Amarillo native, graduate of Amarillo High and West Texas A&M where he played offensive line, and helped oversee one of the most successful stretches in Caprock football history over the past nine years.

"I'm extremely excited to be a Randall Raider," Sherwood said. "I'm ready to hit the ground running."

Sherwood was hired at Caprock at the age of 27, making him one of the youngest Class 5A head football coaches in Texas history. The Longhorns made the postseason four times under Sherwood's guidance, half the number of postseason appearances in school history. In 2018, he led Caprock to a district championship and the only playoff win in program history. He was named District Coach of the Year that season.

Now, he heads over from AISD to CISD. His message to his new team at Randall was simple.

"Be ready for some excitement," Sherwood said. "Be ready for some fun. They know they have the tradition there at Randall High School. ... I'm ready to get in there with the kids, to talk to them, get them motivated and understand that I'm their guy, they're my kids and we're ready to do something special."

CISD Athletic Director Toby Tucker was excited for what Sherwood brings to the table.

"I think he's a guy that comes in immediately with a plan," Tucker said. "He immediately has a process. He's watched more film on our kids than I have. He's just really ready to roll."

At press time, no details were known as to who would fill the head coaching position at Caprock.

Other coaching news

In addition to Sherwood's hire, three other big decisions have been made around the area.

Muleshoe will have a new head boys basketball coach. Chris Mosier, who was an assistant with the Mules this past season, will take over for Humberto Gonzalez.

Tulia is seeking a new softball coach as former head coach Adam Nix is no longer with the school.

With the announcement of Nic Williams' departure at Booker for an administrative role at Brownfield, the Kiowas announced they will be moving down to six-man football this season.
