Dan Evans' comeback hits a snag as he loses in Glasgow
Dan Evans’s comeback tournament in Glasgow hit the buffers yesterday as he was defeated in three sets - 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 - by the world No. 331 Lucas Miedler. Evans will nevertheless go away with five rankings points, which will enable him to enter qualifying for the next Lawn Tennis Association-run Challenger event - which starts in Loughborough in three weeks’ time - without having to ask for a wild card.
Yet we may not have to wait that long to see him again. Judging from Evans’s comments last night, it seems probable that he will play a Futures event - perhaps in Tunisia - before that.
“I’m not really disappointed,” said Evans. “He’s better than his ranking I’m sure of that and it was a good level match. I got a bit tired at the start of the third set and that was it really, lost my serve, just a bit rusty at the start of the third set.
“But that’s a really good game I’ve just played, I played probably the best in that match than all the matches I’ve played this week. I’m starting to feel the ball way better so I’m looking forward to hopefully playing again soon. My back’s a bit sore, so are my feet, definitely just from getting back on court.”
Meanwhile Heather Watson’s losing streak lengthened to seven straight matches as she was swept aside 6-1, 6-3 by world No. 86 Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in the first round of the clay-court event in Prague. For the last time Watson won a tour match, you have to go back to the second week of the year in Hobart.
