Dallas Cowboys’ Trevon Diggs contract extension gets interesting grade

NFL teams looking to lock down their best players will give them hefty contract extensions, but they aren’t always properly valued. At the end of the day, everyone will have their own thoughts on each and every contract.

Touchdown Wire’s Jarrett Bailey recently shared his opinion on a handful of recent contract extensions, one of which being former Alabama cornerback, Trevon Diggs.

Diggs and the Dallas Cowboys reached a five-year, $97 million extension that will keep him with the franchise through the 2028 season.

Bailey gave this contract a grade of ‘C+.’ and wasn’t a big fan of it overall.

“Diggs gets overrated in my eyes,” writes Bailey. “The interception numbers tend to be rose-tinted glasses for how often he tends to get beat in coverage. That isn’t to say he isn’t good- he is. However, I wouldn’t place him in that elite tier. He allowed the seventh-most receptions of any defensive back in 2022, and gave up the sixth-most yards after catch, as well. That said, he was fifth in the league in passes broken up, but he was mostly a middle-of-the-pack cornerback in 2022.

“This felt like a bit of an overpay for a big splash or get slashed type of cornerback.”

Through three seasons in the league, Diggs has 169 total tackles, 17 interceptions, 49 passes defended and two defensive touchdowns. He had a stellar 2021 season but regressed in 2022. He looks to bounce back in the upcoming 2023 season.
