Ezekiel Elliott heads to Mexico to train amid contract dispute with Cowboys

Ezekiel Elliott is still holding out for a new contract with the Dallas Cowboys, and has yet to show up to training camp in Oxnard, California.

He isn’t waiting around in Dallas for his team to strike a new deal with the organization, either.

Instead, Elliott left for Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, on Monday to go train at his agent’s property, according to the NFL Network’s Jane Slater.

Elliott has made the training trek to Baja California Sur before, most notably during his six-game suspension in 2017. That time, however, Elliott was unable to use the Cowboys’ facilities.

The team apparently didn’t take the news of the trip well, either. Members of the front office reportedly thought the trip was “not a good look,” according to Slater, and are still committed to getting the running back to training camp in Southern California as soon as possible.

Dallas tendered a “solid offer” to Elliott on Monday, too, according to USA Today’s Jori Epstein, though has yet to hear back. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, however, made it clear that he isn’t willing to overpay for the running back to remain in Dallas.

“The point there is, you don’t have to have a rushing champion to win a Super Bowl,” Jones said Monday. “Emmitt (Smith) was the first one to do it. That’s one of the dilemmas at running back is that the league knows you can win Super Bowls and not have the Emmitt Smith back there or not have Zeke back there.”

With Elliott now south of the border, it’s looks like he’s in no immediate rush to join his team at training camp. He’s prepared to wait for the deal he wants.
