Dakota Wesleyan women's basketball uses strong second half to finish California trip at 2-0
Dec. 31—SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — The No. 21-ranked Dakota Wesleyan women's basketball team rolled to a win on New Year's Eve.
After a back-and-forth start, the Tigers were up by six at half, holding a 32-26 lead, before they pulled away in the second half, outsourcing The Master's University (Calif.) 40-15 in the final two quarters and securing a 72-41 win.
Jada Campbell scored 15 of her 21 points in the second half, including a fourth quarter where she went 4-for-5 from the field for nine points, as DWU (10-3) outscored The Master's 15-5 in the final frame.
Matti Reiner, Isabel Ihnen and Lacey Sprakel also scored in double figures, with Reiner putting up 12 points, Ihnen adding 11 and Sprakel chipping in 10 off the bench. Reiner pulled down nine rebounds, while Rylee Rosenquist contributed nine points, four assists and seven rebounds in 21 minutes coming off the bench.
For The Master's (10-3), which was receiving votes in the most recent NAIA national poll, Ella Brubaker had 19 points and three steals, and Lexi Hernandez put up 13 points.
DWU shot 47.8% from the field and 40% from 3-point range, while limiting The Master's to 24.6% shooting and a 12.5% clip from beyond the arc. The Tigers also outrebounded The Master's 49-35 and forced 20 turnovers, while surrendering 18 of their own.
On top of that, DWU assisted on 23 of its 32 field goals and put up 42 points in the paint compared to 22 from The Master's.
The Tigers head back home for their next matchup against No. 22 Briar Cliff on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2023, in a Great Plains Athletic Conference tilt.
